He underwent surgery and was forced to miss the entire 2015–16 season.

Exum had shoulder surgery in October 2017. He made his first appearance of the season on March 15, 2018, scoring 10 points in a 116–88 win over the Phoenix Suns.

Cavaliers of Cleveland

On December 24, 2019, Exum was dealt with the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Jordan Clarkson and two second-round picks.

On January 16, 2021, Exum was dealt with the Houston Rockets in a four-team trade involving the Cleveland Cavaliers, in which James Harden was sent to the Brooklyn Nets.
