Johnny Curtis is an American professional wrestler who currently competes for the WWE’s NXT brand as Fandango. Curtis Jonathan Hussey, also known as Johnny Curtis. Curtis began his professional wrestling career in September 1999.

Initially, Johnny battled in a variety of indie promotions, winning titles such as the PLW New England Championship, the PWF Northeast Tag Team Championship, the PWF Northeast Heavyweight Championship, the NCW New England Championship and others.

Curtis won the Florida Tag Team Championship, NXT’s Season Four, NXT Tag Team Championships, and other titles after signing with the WWE under the ring names “Johnny Curtis” and “Fandango.”

Johnny began his career in September 1999, after training with Killer Kowalski.

Over the years, he battled for a number of indie companies in New England.

Johnny also wrestled in Power League Wrestling (PLW) from 2000 until 2003.

Curtis won the PLW New England Championship at the time. Similarly, after defeating Chris Blackheart at Power-fest 2002, he held the title from May 19th, 2002 to May 18th, 2003.

During this period, Johnny also wrestled in the Premier Wrestling Federation, winning the PWF Northeast Tag Team Championship from Fuzion on October 28th, 2002.

They maintained the championship until November 15th, 2002, when they were defeated by Paiva and Kid Mikaze.

Curtis and Phoenix also won a three-way Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match, which helped them win the championship again on February 15th, 2003.

Similarly, they held the Storm Brothers championship until April 4th, 2003, when Phoenix and The Talent Exchange’s manager, Dean Ripley, lost it.

Wrestling in the Deep South

Furthermore, Johnny got a developmental contract with (WWE) World Wrestling Entertainment in 2006As a result, Johnny joined the (DSW) Deep South Wrestling developing area.

Curtis also made his debut for the territory on November 9th, 2006, when he faced David Heath.

Johnny and Robert Anthony defeated The Headliners on February 15th, 2007, for their first DSW victory after losing continuously for several weeks.

Curtis, on the other hand, continued to work with Anthony and won a couple more matches.

The team faced the DSW Tag Team Champions Team Elite in a championship match on March 15, 2007, however they were unable to win the title.

Later, Johnny returned to singles competition, and after losing two battles, he won his final DSW match on April 12th, 2007, defeating Frankie Coverdale.

Wrestling in Florida Championships

Furthermore, after WWE severed connections with DSW, Johnny and the rest of the DSW roster were relocated to the newly formed Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in June.

Similarly, Johnny made his FCW debut on June 26th, 2007, defeating former tag team member Robert Anthony.

Johnny defeated Chris Gray on December 18th after a mixed record as a singles and tag team wrestler.

2007 and rise to the top of the FCW Southern Heavyweight Championship.

Johnny and Tyler Reks defeated The New Hart Foundation for the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship on December 11th, 2008.

Curtis and Reks were successful and won the competition on multiple occasions.

As a result, after Reks joined the WWE main roster, Johnny renamed himself Jonathan Curtis and became a villain.

On June 25, 2009, the two fought up for Reks’ Florida Heavyweight Championship, but Johnny was unable to win. Curtis eventually changed his ring name back to Johnny Curtis.

NXT

R-Truth was Johhny’s mentor during the fourth season of NXT.

Johnny made his in-ring debut on the December 7th, 2011 episode of NXT, defeating fellow rookie Jacob Novak in a singles battle.

After several dark battles, Johnny made his SmackDown debut in a weird backstage promo on June 3rd, 2011.

Curtis revealed that because to R-recent Truth’s villainous turn, his promised tag team title chance was “not happening.”

Similarly, Johnny made his SmackDown in-ring debut on the August 12th, 2011 broadcast, where he was squashed by Mark Henry in less than a minute, which was his only non-battle royal encounter on SmackDown in 2011.

Furthermore, for the rest of 2012, Johnny worked as a tag team with Michael McGillicutty.

On the final episode of NXT’s fifth season, June 13th, 2011, Johnny teamed with McGillicutty, however they were defeated by the Usos.

After the fifth season of NXT, the developmental territory was rebranded Florida Championship Wrestling, and the wrestlers continued to perform on NXT.

As a result of winning season four of NXT, Johnny finally gets his tag team title shot when he teamed up with McGillicutty.

Championship Activities

Furthermore, on October 23rd, 2012, Johnny unveiled Fandango, a new ballroom dancer persona, in a dark match, with vignettes for the character showing in November.

Fandango’s character made his SmackDown debut on March 1st, 2013, after months of promotional videos.

In addition, Johnny had a female dance partner, Andrea Lynn (a real-life dancer and college student) who subsequently became Summer Rae, a developmental wrestler.

Despite his debut, Johnny repeatedly refused to wrestle his first match since the ring announcers and his opponents couldn’t pronounce “Fandango” correctly.

Breezango

Furthermore, on the April 14th, 2017 episode of SmackDown, Johnny and Goldust competed in the WWE Tag Team Championship number one contender’s tournament.

On the May 12th, 2017 episode of SmackDown, a bout between Johnny and Goldust and R-Truth and Tyler Breeze concluded in an unusual way as Johnny and Breeze turned on their partners, who refused to fight each other.

Similarly, Curtis allied with Breeze, taking the moniker “Breezango,” and thereby turning heel once more.

Breezango defeated The Usos on July 24th, 2017, at Battleground after SmackDown drafted Breeze and Curtis during the WWE draft.

Breezango also defeated The Vaudevillains on the November 8th, 2017 episode of SmackDown Live to qualify for Team SmackDown for the 10-on-10 Survivor Series Tag Team Elimination match at Survivor Series.

Similarly, on April 25th, 2017, Breezango defeated The Ascension in a Beat the Clock challenge match on SmackDown Live, becoming the number one contender for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

Injury

Johnny suffered a left labrum tear in his shoulder on July 6, 2019, and was sidelined for at least six months.

Curtis later returned from his injuries a year later, on the July 31st, 2019, episode of NXT, saving his tag team partner Tyler Breeze from The Forgotten Sons’ post-match attack.

Curtis was forced to miss another game in December due to an injury and stated that he had undergone Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, with a recovery time of six to twelve months.

Curtis made his NXT debut on June 3rd, 2020, teaming with Breeze to defeat Oney Lorcan, Danny Burch, and The Undisputed Era in a number one contender’s match for the NXT Tag Team Championship.

Similarly, Breezango defeated Imperium to win the belts on the August 26th, 2020, NXT program, earning Curtis’ first title in WWE nearly ten years after his NXT debut.

Breezango lost the belts to Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan on the October 21 broadcast of NXT, ending their reign after 56 days.

Fandango and Tyler Breeze were released from their WWE contracts on June 25, 2021, ending their 15-year association with the promotion.
