Career in High School

Brandon was a student-athlete at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, where he scored a 4.3 grade-point average.

In 2009 and 2010, he was named Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Pine Crest won four state championship games under his leadership, including two in 2008 and 2009.

Brandon was also a four-time 3A-1A Basketball Player of the Year and a two-time Mr. Basketball winner in Florida (as named by the Miami Herald).

He has 3,515 points in his career, which puts him in second place all-time in Florida high school basketball scoring.

Following his senior year, Knight participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game, Nike Hoop Summit, and Jordan Brand Classic.

In the 2010 McDonald’s All-American Game, he hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the West a 107–104 victory.

College Life

Knight averaged 17.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 38 games for the Kentucky Wildcats as a rookie.

He also earned First-Team All-SEC honors from the coaches, Second-Team All-SEC honors from the media, and selection to the SEC All-Freshman team after leading the team in SEC play.

After scoring 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists against North Carolina in the Elite Eight, he was named the NCAA East Region All-Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Knight entered the NBA draft in April 2011, three years before his NCAA eligibility expired.

Career Opportunities

Knight was taken eighth overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons.

In May 2012, the athlete was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, the first Pistons rookie to do so since Grant Hill (1994–95).

Knight had a strong first season, earning All-Rookie honors, but it was evident early on that he wasn’t cut out for starting NBA point guard duty, as he struggled with offense efficiency.

The player was traded to the Bucks for Brandon Jennings, the Swag King, after two seasons.

Knight spent a year and a half with the Bucks, where he was a member of a shockingly excellent team, before being traded to the Suns in a transaction that brought Michael Carter-Williams to Milwaukee.

After two years with the Suns, Knight was traded to Houston in a salary dump deal after an impressive first season.

Before being transferred again in a money dump move from Houston to Cleveland in Houston, he was rarely on the floor.

Brandon signed a 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks on December 23, 2021, then Sioux Falls re-acquired him on January 14, 2022, when the 10-day contract expired.

On March 29, he signed a second 10-day contract with the Mavericks.

Injury

On February 19, 2015, Knight was moved to the Phoenix Suns along with Kendall Marshall in a three-team trade that also included the Philadelphia 76ers.

He missed a month in March with a left ankle injury, then the rest of the season with a left heel bone bruise that required surgery.

Despite being healthy in the second half of the 2016–17 season, Knight was shut down after coming off the bench for the first half.

He was forced to miss the 2017–18 season after tearing his ACL in his left knee in July 2017.

He appeared in 12 games for the Rockets, the most recent of which was on January 11 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was forced to sit out in January owing to left knee soreness.

Knight hasn’t been able to stay on a roster since 2018, and his three-game stint with the Mavs was his first in the NBA since spending 16 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons in the 2019-2020 season.
