Career Highlights
Charles was taken by the professional team San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 1986 NFL Draft as the 96th overall choice.
He played outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense during his debut season. He concluded the season with 12 sacks, which put him behind Leslie O’Neal on the rookie list.
He was selected for the NFL All-Rookie team by Pro Football Weekly and United Press International.
In 1990, he received the UPI NFC Defensive Player of the Year award and was selected unanimously for the All-Pro team.
