Playing and Coaching Career

Tom Chivington coached him from 1980 to 1982, starting with a Foothill College collegiate team.

Brad won the California Junior College Singles Championship and the U.S. Amateur Hardcourt Championship while still a freshman in college, the icing on the cake. He was named to the American Junior Davis Cup team at the age of 20.

Furthermore, in 1981, a young Brad represented the United States at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

He lost in the finals to Shlomo Glickstein, but he made up for it by winning gold with Jon Levine.

Brad went on to win 20 top-level singles titles in his career after that.

But it was in Cincinnati in 1989 when he bagged the biggest one. Not only that, but Gilbert also had a dreadful playing career, with six losses to Stefan Edberg and a total of 20 losses.

As a result, Brad was able to improve as a player and, as a result, as a coach.

Nonetheless, Gilbert’s crowning achievement came in 1989, when he won five singles and defeated future Hall of Famers Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Boris Becker, and Stefan Edberg.

The next year, he finished second in the Grand Slam Cup in his home country.

Finally, over his ten-year professional career, the American made the Top 10 a total of nine times. Gilbert, too, had a fantastic record of 519 victories to 288 defeats.

Brad, on the other hand, went 10-5 in the Davis Cup from 1986 to 1993, with seven wins and one loss on hard courts and carpet.

In 1988, the tennis great added an Olympic bronze medal to his resume before retiring in 1995.

Playing Techniques

Gilbert was recognized as one of the best strategists on the court, and he enjoyed exploiting an opponent’s flaws.

He was also excessively defensive in his play moves because he lacked any unique offensive strategies. Brad’s greatest strength was keeping the ball in play and reading the game as a whole.

While a tough opponent on the field, the American was a laid-back outsider. Mindgames, defensive tempo, and building on impeding oppositions’ rhythm are what kept Gilbert at the top of the table for many years.

Due to Brad’s ability to play the ball at an accurate but slow pace, commentators described him as a pusher.

Hence, his strategic prowess would make him a superb coach for future players like Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Alex Bogdanovic, Kei Nishikori, Sam Querrey even Andy Murray.

After quitting as a coach, the former tennis great now works as a tennis analyst.

You can catch Gilbert in practically many significant matches interviewing players pre and post-match.
