Early Career

Nathan debuted in the United States Junior Nationals in 2007 and 2008, where he finished tenth for two years in a row, followed by an improvised third place in the Junior level.

Chen’s first stepping stone came the following year, when he became the youngest novice champion in US Figure Skating history.

International Junior Level

Nathan made his international debut in Linz, Austria, through JGP Austria in September 2012. He began his career with a gold medal in the field, where he scored 222 points.

Unfortunately, due to his leg injury, he was unable to continue; as a result, he was forced to participate the next year.

As a result, he retained his bronze medal at the 2013 U.S. Championships in Omaha, Nebraska, at the junior level.

Chen won gold in the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Mexico, the Junior Grand Prix Final in Japan, and bronze at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Bulgaria.

He also smashed the junior men’s record, which had stood for six years.

National Senior Level

Chen made his senior debut at the Pacific Sectional Championships in late 2014, marking his transition to the senior level of skating.

Chen was only able to participate in the scaled-back versions of his short and long programs in 2015 because to his heel ailment.

Chen went on to win the gold medal in the ISU Junior Grand Prix series in 2016. He also made history by becoming the first American to land two quadruple jumps in the short program and the first to land four quadruple leaps in the long program at the 2016 US Championship.

In the same year, he beat Evan Lysacek’s Olympic record of 90.3 with a time of 93.85. Chen also holds the record for being the second-youngest male skater to win a medal at the GPF.

Olympics

Nathan was choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne prior to the Olympics season, and under her, he was able to land on five different quads in a competition.

Chen appeared alongside his US Team teammates Jeremy Abbott, Karen Chen, and Mirai Nagasu during his time on the show.

In the free skate at the 2018 Olympics, Chen attempted six quads and landed five cleanly. He was the first man in Olympic history to attempt six quads.

Moreover, Nathan was placed first in the free skate with a score of 215.08, which is the highest in Olympic history, and earned a total score of 297.35 to move up twelve places from the short program to finish in fifth place overall.

Not long ago, in the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships, Nathan bagged the men’s championship.
