Who is Huma Abedin?
Huma Abedin is no stranger to celebrity. However, she is only now getting a taste of the kind of attention that comes with being associated with an Oscar-winning actor.
The political aide was recently confirmed to be dating Bradley Cooper, and their relationship has sparked speculation about her identity.
So, who exactly is Huma Abedin? Here are some facts about Hillary Clinton’s long-term political assistant and close friend of Vogue’s editor-in-chief.
Age, Parents, and Origins of Huma Abedin
Abedin was born on July 28, 1975, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, as Huma Mahmood Abedin.
Her academic parents were immigrants from India and Pakistan.
She did not, however, grow up in the United States.
When she was two years old, her parents were offered positions at the University of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
Needless to say, they relocated to the Middle East,
where she grew up alongside her siblings in Jeddah until she was old enough to attend college, at which point she returned to the United States.
But it wasn’t that she didn’t travel when she was younger.
Her youth was filled with diverse cultural experiences,
and she credits her cosmopolitan international background with shaping who she is now.
She had always wanted to work in journalism.
Life, however, had other ideas for her.
Despite receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from George Washington University,
she gravitated toward her minor — political science — while keeping her journalism goals alive.
Abedin started as an intern in the White House during Bill Clinton’s presidency in 1996 and hasn’t looked back since.
She is employed by Hillary Clinton
Her first position at the White House was in the First Lady’s office.
She became Clinton’s senior counselor in the US Senate and traveling chief of staff for her 2008 presidential campaign after only four years on the job.
In 2009, she was named deputy chief of staff at the US Department of State, and in 2016,
she was named vice chair of Hillary for America. Abedin is Clinton’s chief of staff and has been with her for over 25 years.
She attributes her success to her grandmother.
Abedin’s family has always valued education. It all started with her maternal grandmother,
who forced herself to earn a high education.
“I often think of my maternal grandmother,
who had such an insatiable desire to attend school in India when all her other friends were being taught at home,”
Abedin said of her grandmother.
Her grandma “wanted more for herself and she also wanted more for her daughter”,
at a time when women were supposed to study a little algebra and embroidery.
Huma Abedin, Bradley Cooper’s most recent love interest, was raised in the Middle East.
Abedin stated that her accomplishments, such as working at the White House,
sleeping in Buckingham Palace, and riding on Air Force 1,
would not have been possible if her grandmother “had not opted to go to school 100 years ago.”
The ex-husband of Huma Abedin and Her Dating Life
After a three-year relationship phase and a year-long engagement, Abedin married former Congressman Anthony Weiner in July 2010.
She revealed in her biography, Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds, how she lost her virginity to Weiner at the age of 32.
Jordan, her first and only child with Weiner, was born in December 2011.
Everything was going swimmingly in their household until 2016 when she hit rock bottom.
After sexting charges appeared, Abedin announced her divorce from her then-husband on August 29, 2016.
She officially filed for divorce on May 19, 2017, just days after he pled guilty to the allegations and initially requested sole custody of her kid.
However, with the media exacerbating the situation, they withdrew their divorce petition and chose to resolve matters privately.
