Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar created the multilingual, epic historical mystery-horror streaming television series 1899. The first episode premiered on Netflix on November 17, 2022. There are eight episodes in the first season.

The series stars Emily Beecham, Andreas Pietschmann, Aneurin Barnard, Miguel Bernardeau, Mathilde Ollivier, and many other well-known actors.

The plot revolves around a group of European immigrants sailing from London to New York City on the steamship Kerberos in 1899, just before the turn of the century.

The passengers are united in their optimism about what the future holds until they come across another migrant ship, the Prometheus, adrift on the open sea.

A previously straightforward journey to the promised land devolves into a terrifying nightmare of unimaginable proportions.

The series has an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, with an average rating of 7.30/10 based on 18 reviews.

Similarly, it received “generally positive reviews,” according to Metacritic’s weighted average rating system, with a score of 69 out of 100.

The show cost €60 million to produce, with funding from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg of €2 million, the German Motion Picture Fund of €10 million, and Netflix of €48 million, making it the most expensive German television program ever produced.

Many fans reacted positively to the series because the majority of the audience liked it and described it as a “mind-bending series,” but a few people disagreed and said it was the “worst show.”

“Excellent show,” one viewer commented. If you enjoy ominous, dark mystery, you will enjoy this show.

“The international cast also adds to the intrigue of this show,” said one Reddit user while discussing 1899.

“Zero likable characters, dumb mystery, long and meandering episode lengths, seriously just hire an editor or something Netflix???” There should have been six 30-minute episodes. Spend 8 hours watching White Lotus or something.”

Many viewers compared the show to Dark, as both series were created by the same people.

“Dark had an actual story, characters, and relationships, and was entertaining to the very end,” one Dark fan said. It’s a 30-minute short story stretched into 8 [expletive] hours in [1899].”

“Overall, the show is….fine,” said another. I’m on episode 6 and will continue to watch. But it’s certainly not DarK.”

However, viewers are criticizing the German series’ dialogues and the show’s English dubbed version, claiming it is poor quality.

Fans also advised against watching the show in English dub, instead switching to English [Original] because the dubbed version was “extremely poor,” as one viewer exclaimed.

Also, because the show is in multiple languages, it is best if the viewer sticks to the original.
