Suleika Jaouad was born on July 5, 1988, in New York City’s Lower East Side to immigrant parents.

Her mother is Swiss, while her father is from Tunisia, which is where her parents currently reside.

In one of her interviews, she stated that her family used to rent out their house at the end of each school year and use the proceeds to travel for the summer.

They traveled to nations ranging from Nicaragua to Mexico.

But she now believes that her unusual upbringing played a significant role in her life and that she would not trade it for anything else.

Suleika Jaouad studied double bass at The Juilliard School’s pre-college program before graduating with honors from Princeton University, where she majored in Near Eastern Studies and minored in Gender Studies and French.

Jaouad worked on human rights campaigns for the Centre for Constitutional Rights, Oxfam, and the African Union while at Princeton.

She also earned an MFA in writing and literature from Bennington College and studied abroad in Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt, researching and writing on women’s issues.

Professional Career

Jaouad traveled to Paris after graduating from Princeton, where she worked as a paralegal and aspired to be a writer covering worldwide issues.

But Life had other plans for her, and at the age of 22, she was afflicted with a rare form of leukemia.

She began writing the acclaimed New York Times column and video series “Life, Interrupted” while in the hospital and has since become a vocal advocate for those dealing with illness and other forms of misfortune.

She was given a one-in-three chance of life, but she is now cancer-free after nearly four years of chemotherapy, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant.

Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of Life Interrupted chronicles her incredible narrative of pain, aspiration, deprivation, perseverance, and a search for community and meaning. It’s for pals who “crossed the river too soon.”

Suleika also served on Barack Obama’s Presidential Cancer Panel, the Bone Marrow and Cancer Foundation’s national advisory board, and the Arts & Letters Committee of the Brooklyn Public Library.

Her extraordinary abilities in public speaking, reporting, and campaigning have taken her from the United Nations and Capitol Hill to a maximum-security jail and a tiny Montana two-room schoolhouse.
