“I wish Maria Taylor the best of luck in the world – she covers football and basketball,” Nichols reportedly said.

“If you need to give her additional things to do because you are feeling pressure about your poor longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know firsthand from the female side of it — like, go for it. Simply look for it elsewhere.

You’re not going to find it or take it away from me.”

After her problematic words were made public, Nichols quickly apologized on July 5, 2021, via her renowned NBA show, The Jump.

“The first thing they teach you in journalism school is don’t be the story,” she said.

“But I also don’t want to leave this moment without expressing how much I respect and love our colleagues here at ESPN, how terribly, deeply sorry I am for failing people I have disappointed, including Maria Taylor, and how glad I am to be a part of this wonderful team.”
