She also entered a not-guilty plea to one count of felony child endangerment.

Poundstone was barred from ever accepting foster children again, sentenced to five years of probation, and six months of rehabilitation, ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and a child-abuse program, and subjected to random drug and alcohol tests.

In 2002, she also discussed her personal responsibility for the events that led to her arrest and the steps she has taken, which include a six-month alcoholism treatment program, but she stated that she did not commit any lewd acts or child abuse.

In 1979, she began performing stand-up comedy at open-mic nights in Boston.

Poundstone traveled across the United States by Greyhound bus in the 1980s, stopping in at open-mic nights at comedy clubs along the way.

Poundstone remained in San Francisco, where she rose to prominence through improvised performances at Holy City Zoo and The Other Cafe comedy club in Cole Valley.

In 1984, Robin Williams saw her act and encouraged her to relocate to Los Angeles. When Williams hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live, Poundstone performed her act. She was cast in the film Gremloids the same year.

Poundstone continued to work as a comedian and began appearing on numerous talk shows. Poundstone was named “Best Female Stand-Up Comic” by the American Comedy Awards in 1989.

She also wrote and starred in an HBO special called Cats, Cops, and Stuff, for which she received a CableACE Award in 1990, making her the first woman to do so.
