He is a well-known historian who was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony in July 2013 for his dedication to making American history as widely available and accessible as possible.

Ed was also the president of the Organization of American Historians from 2017 to 2018.

He has also written six books and edited seven books on the history of nineteenth-century America. He is also the founder of New American History, an initiative launched in 2015 to enable engaged and innovative learning in history at all grade levels.
