Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith have played the on-screen couple several times, leading many to wonder if the two are married in real life as well. They gave outstanding performances as one of Hope Valley’s couples, Rosemary and Leland, on the Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart. They have also appeared as couples on The Perfect Bride: Wedding Bells.

In reality, Hutton and Smith are not married. And, while they are both married, they are not married to each other.

They each have a significant other with whom they have been in a long-term relationship.

Speaking of being married for a long time, Hutton and Smith discussed it a few years ago when they appeared on Hallmark’s Home & Family in late February 2020.

During their appearance, the on-screen couple first showed a preview of the new episode of When Calls the Heart and then talked more about it.

Co-host Debbie Matenopoulos later discussed Hutton and Smith’s acting and on-screen chemistry.

“You know what?” said Matenopoulos. Honestly, watching you two on camera, I said it before we watched the clip, but the two of you are so good, it’s like you’re married.”

She then stated that, while Hutton and Smith are not married in real life because they are an on-screen couple, they have been happily married for more than 17 years. “The big deal,” added co-host Cameron Mathison.

Matenopoulos then asked Hutton and Smith about the secret to long-term marriage, saying, “I’d like to know, and for everyone at home watching as well, what’s the secret?

What is the best piece of advice you could give to newlyweds just starting out on their journey together?”

Smith asked Hutton to go first, joking that he didn’t have anything to say.

Hutton went on to say that the best advice she ever received came from her sister at her bridal shower.

“Of course, there was a bridal shower when I was getting married. And everyone was instructed to write their best piece of advice on a small card.

Everyone is writing the expected things like “don’t go to bed angry and be the first to apologize.”

“And she [Hutton’s sister] just like wrote out a recipe for West Indian chicken, and she’s like that’ll do for you.

“And it’s the only card I’ve kept all these years,” she added. Hutton burst out laughing after saying that.

Mathison immediately responded, “That’s genius,” and then asked his co-host, Maria Matenopoulos, if she enjoys cooking.

In response, Matenopoulos stated, “Of course. I enjoy cooking, but I believe you guys – correct me if I’m wrong – [think] happy wife, happy life.”

Smith seemed to agree with Matenopoulos’ as he immediately jumped into the conversation and said, “No, no, I agree.

That is my one piece of advice [to long-term couples and newlyweds].”

“As I’ve gotten older, I realized that taking my ego out of the relationship and just letting her have her way does me no harm and does her a world of good which ultimately does the relationship so much good.

And the more I give up control, the better it gets,” he added.

Smith also stated that he has done the same with friendships and has relinquished control.
