Kelly Marie Tran Harassment from ‘Star Wars Fans on the Internet

Kelly Marie Tran spoke up about online harassment after being cast in a key role in a Star Wars film in an August 2018 contributor essay for the New York Times.

“Their statements seemed to validate what my upbringing as a woman and a person of color had already taught me: that I belonged in the edges and spaces, valid only as a minor player in their lives and stories,” she wrote.

She also related those “hateful” statements to her “fear” when she was 9 and quit speaking Vietnamese because she was weary of being mocked by other kids.

She went on to say that she was always made to feel different and as if she didn’t fit in the society she was living in.

“And that feeling, I recognize now, was and is guilt, shame for what made me different, humiliation for the society from which I came,” she explained.

“And the most frustrating thing for me was that I felt it at all.”

Trans even began hating herself, believing she had shortcomings.

“I thought, ‘Oh, maybe if I was slimmer,’ or ‘Maybe if I let my hair grow out,’ and, worst of all, ‘Maybe if I wasn’t Asian.”

However, in the present, the actress states she is no longer “afraid” of any comments or bullying based on her ethnicity, weight reduction, or skin color.

“But I’m a much stronger person today, and I have the means to deal with those situations when they come.

I’m no longer terrified. I’m finally making space for myself and asking for what I want.

“God, I wish I’d known how to do it 10 years ago,” she commented in 2021 to the same outlet.
