Jeff Stein was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 13, 1944. He has been alive for 78 years.

His parents raised him in New England after he was born in Philadelphia. In 1954, Jeff and his family relocated to Maine. He is of white ethnicity and holds an American nationality.

Jeff Stein went to school in Providence, Rhode Island, before relocating to Hingham, Massachusetts, where he graduated from high school in 1962.

Stein joined the US Army in 1967 and worked as a case officer for US Army Intelligence from 1968 to 1969. While stationed in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He continues to write op-ed pieces and book reviews for The New York Times and The Washington Post in addition to his SpyTalk work.

Jeff has written for a variety of publications over the years, including Esquire, Playboy, Vanity Fair, GQ, The New Republic, The Nation, and The Christian Science Monitor.

He also appears on CBS, NPRCNN, MSNBC, and BBC, among other networks, to discuss national security issues in the United States. He began his journalism career at a weekly in suburban Washington, D.C.

Jeff worked as a freelancer for major newspapers and magazines while reporting for NPR in its early years. He briefly edited the Washington City Paper in 1981 before starting his own publication, The Washington Weekly.

Jeff co-wrote the book Saddam’s Bombmaker: The Daring Escape of the Man Who Built Iraq’s Secret Weapon with Khidhir Hamza (2000).

A Murder in Wartime: The Untold Spy Story That Changed the Course of the Vietnam War was published in 1992. The Vietnam Factbook, his third book, was released in 1987.
