Basketball Career

Career in high school

Murray enrolled in Grand River Collegiate Institute in his hometown of Kitchener for high school. He went on to Orangeville Prep School in Orangeville, Ontario, after that.

His father was an assistant coach there, and he was a member of the school’s squad. He formed a pair with Thon Marker, defeating numerous American schools and bringing them victory.

He was selected MVP during his game in the Jordan Brand Classic International Game in 2013, becoming the second Canadian to win after Duane Notice.

Similarly, he scored a game-high 30 points and was voted MVP for the second time in the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit.

He was voted MVP of the BioSteel All Canadians Basketball Game in 2015 when he competed with elite high school players.

He later played basketball for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

Career in College

Jamal started college on June 24, 2015. He signed a letter of intent to play for Coach John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats.

Despite being a freshman, he was named to the John R Wooden Award’s Midseason Top 25 list. He was also named to the 35-man midseason watchlist for the Naismith Trophy.

During his first season, he appeared in 36 games and averaged 20.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 40.8 percent from the three-point range.

He was later voted a third-team All-American by the Associated Press after his freshman season.

Likewise, his dedication and hard work earned him spots on the All-SEC first team and the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Murray’s 20.0 points per game, the most by any rookie in Kentucky history, is one of his most memorable achievements.

Finally, he was declared for the NBA draft in April 2016, forcing him to forego his remaining three years of NCAA eligibility.

A Professional Life

Jamal began his professional career in June 2016 after the Denver Nuggets selected him seventh overall in the 2019 NBA draft.

He signed a rookie deal with the Nuggets on August 9, 2016. In November 2016, he set a career-best with 19 points in a loss against the Portland Trail Blazers 112-105.

Similarly, in a game against the Chicago Bulls, he surpassed that mark by scoring 24 points in a 110-107 victory.

His efforts in November and December earned him the title of Western Conference Rookie of the Month.

He scored a career-high 30 points in a 122-106 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on April 7, 2017.

At the end of the season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for his accomplishments.

Murray scored a lot of points in his various games, which helped his side win. Murray hasn’t had any injuries during his career, with the exception of a sprained ankle on two occasions.

He missed roughly six games from the 17th of January to the 6th of February 2018 due to a sprained left ankle.

Charity Works

Murray has always been humble about his beginnings, despite entering the spotlight at an early age.

Murray has started two humanitarian organizations since joining the NBA.

His initial project was to supply backpacks and school supplies to children in the Kitchener-Waterloo region.

Second, he assisted Region Waterloo in partnering with a housing complex to open a basketball court at the Amos Avenue housing complex.

The death of a toddler outside the property, who was hit and killed by the car, served as motivation for the court.

Similarly, he organized a two-day basketball clinic in Jamaica for roughly 800 children at Montego Bay Community alongside his father and Rondae Hollis-Johnson of the Toronto Raptors.

They also provided 400 bags with school materials to the children.

Murray also demonstrated his gratitude by gifting 200 meals from the famed Denver Middle Eastern restaurant to the healthcare personnel at UCHealth who were risking their lives for a better world.

Denver had to go away to stay in Denver after being drafted into the NBA, but Harper had to stay back to finish her college and continue her volleyball career.

The pair was able to stay together despite the conditions and the distance.
