Who is Elis James?

Elis James is a comedian, actor, and broadcaster. Elis James is currently the Champion of Champions on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk, having defeated one of the show’s big beasts, Steve Bunce. He also appears on The Guardian’s Football Weekly podcast on occasion, usually to discuss the Welsh National Football Team’s performance.

Early Life and Childhood

Elis James was born in Haverfordwest, Wales, on November 3, 1980. He has 41 years on the clock. Every year on November 3rd, Elis celebrates his birthday.

Carys and Nia are Elis’s younger sisters. His mother served alongside Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert’s father and Welsh musician Euros Childs’ mother.

Professional Career

James co-hosted The Socially Distant Sports Bar podcast with sports journalist Steff Garrero and comedian Mike Bubbins in 2020, inspired by their love of sports but lack of access to live sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elis began hosting the Elis and John Robins show on XFM (now Radio X) on February 16, 2014, alongside colleague comedian John Robins.

This show aired on Saturday afternoons and also had a popular podcast. It also had its final broadcast on March 30, 2019.

He is not ill, but he and John Robins have dug deep into their own and others’ personal experiences to share a wide range of mental health issues, ranging from anxiety and grief to illness, identity, and exclusion.

He began his comedy career in 2005, despite winning the Maes B comedy award at the 1999 National Eisteddfod. Elis began working as a full-time comedian in 2008.

Elis previously worked as a guitarist for the Cardiff-based indie/punk band Heck, fronted by Jemma Roper.

This band also released an EP and was featured on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio Wales, and BBC Introducing’s Wales show, which was later broadcast on Radio 1. They also performed at the NME’s new bands nights.

At the May 2014 Hay Festival, he also served as the MC for the Machynlleth Comedy Festival Gala performance.

Elis shared the stage with partner Isy Suttie, as well as comedians Henry Paker and Mike Wozniak. He performed a new Work in Progress show set in Welsh at the 2015 Machynlleth Comedy Festival.

Elis recorded a Welsh stand-up special titled Rhacs Jibiders at the end of 2015.

It was broadcast on S4C and, like many of the channel’s shows, was also available on the BBC iPlayer. Haleliw, Elis’ next Welsh-language show, premiered on Christmas Day 2019.
