College Career

Nelson began playing in his sophomore year after playing throughout his academic career. At Lowa University, he started off playing for coach Schuerman.

Nelson’s debut season at Lowa saw him average 15.8 points and 10.0 rebounds. He had to leave Lowa for a while due to his involvement in the 1961 college basketball gambling scandal.

Nelson, who was eventually reinstated by the NBA, was never charged with the crime. On the other hand, he had an 18-6 record at Lowa and placed second in the Big Ten Conference.

He was also a teammate-focused player who consistently received plaudits for his great play.

Professional Career
