Amateur Career

Attended Colorado College was McElhinney. He spent four years in college playing ice hockey. In college, he received a 62-15-8 rating.

In the years 2003 and 2005, Curtis earned two selections to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association First All-Star Team.

In the same vein, in 2003 and 2005, he was chosen for the NCAA First and Second All-American Teams. He was selected 176th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Professional Career

In the 2005–2006 seasons, he made his professional debut with the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Season 2006–2008

In 2006–2007, the group shared the AHL lead in shutouts. They helped the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to their best record as a team, 44 victories.

He took part in the AHL All-Star game in 2007. He was further selected for the AHL Second All-Star Team.

He made his NHL debut on October 22, 2007. It was in Miikka Kiprusoff’s place against the San Jose Sharks. During the season, he participated in five NHL games.

Season 2012–2013

On February 22, 2012, the Phoenix Coyotes traded him to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Along with him in the transaction was Antoine Vermette.

Vermette was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the 2012 NHL Entry. In the 2013 Draft, he was also a conditional fifth-round pick.

McElhinney spent the entire season playing for Springfield Falcons, an AHL team affiliated with Columbus Blue Jackets. He actually had a great season of play.

Season 2017
