On Sunday, November 13, The Neighbourhood fired drummer Brandon Fried after lead vocalist Maria Zardoya of The Marias [an indie pop band] accused Fried of groping her.

On November 14, early Monday morning, the Newbury Park, California-based rock band tweeted, “We are grateful to Maria for coming forward.”

Fried would no longer be a member of The Neighbourhood, according to the band, due to the band’s strong stance against any form of abusive behavior toward women.

The announcement came shortly after The Marias shared an Instagram story.

“I was at a bar last night, and I was groped under the table by Brandon Fried @brandonfried_, the drummer of the Neighbourhood,” Zardoya wrote.

She described the experience as one of the “most uncomfortable” she had ever had, with an invasion of her space, privacy, and body.

“@thenbhd ya’ll need a new drummer, this guy is a complete creep,” the lead vocalist added.

Fried, who has been a member of the band since 2014, responded to the allegations on Instagram on Sunday.

He apologized to Zardoya and stated that he was now seeking treatment for his alcohol and drug addiction.

“I am deeply sorry to Maria,” he wrote. My actions were heinous and intolerable.

They do not reflect who I am as a person, but clearly reflect who I have become while under the influence.”

The drummer also expressed regret for disappointing The Neighbourhood and the band’s fans.

Discussions among fans about Brandon Fried’s alleged abuse

Fried disappointed fans of The Marias and The Neighbourhood as soon as the news broke. He has sparked debate on social media, particularly on Reddit.

“quite pissed off rn, the Neighbourhood is one of my favorite bands and I don’t know if I want to listen to their music anymore after this,” one fan of The Neighbourhood wrote.

“This makes me so [expletive] mad because I love both bands CAN MEN IN BANDS LEAVE WOMEN ALONE!!!!!” said another.

“I used to like some of this band’s songs, such as Sweater Weather, Wires, and Cry Baby, but this band is full of disgusting people.”

“I hope Mara Zardoya gets justice,” said another supporter.
