Professional Career

Anna started her carrier in 2013. She began with the BAT Sierakowice club’s youth groups.

She is anxious to show everyone that she has the mentality and expertise to play like the poised professional she was ten years older than her Poland’s highest professional league as a teenager playing against women before she came to UConn.

Auriemma, her coach, said the one thing she appreciated about her when she arrived at Storrs last summer was that she was an absolute professional who did not get distracted.

Her colleagues commented about how dangerous her 3-point shot was during pickup games.

UConn Women’s Basketball

Women’s basketball at UConn is not exactly viewed as an easy place to play for a first-year student.

Breanna Stewart struggled until the postseason of her rookie year, while current team members Crystal Dangerfield and Megan Walker did not make a regular impact until they were sophomores.

It’s hard enough to adjust from high school ball to college with the added weight of playing in the top program.

However, as Christyn Williams showed last season, certain athletes can transcend all that and be a starter from the get-go.

Geno Auriemma expects Anna, a Polish freshman, to fall into the latter classification.

Before coming to UConn, Makurat played for Arka Gdynia in Basket Liga Kobiet, Poland’s professional division.

The league has included various WNBA players such as former Husky Tiffany Hayes and the Connecticut Sun’s Jasmine Thomas, and the New York Liberty’s Rebecca Allen.

Although Makurat did not see much basketball outside of summer practices at UConn, she acquired enough of a feeling for the level of play to relate it to the Polish league.

Makurat should have remained in her home country because she was already competing in a professional league and started her pro career at age 19.

But the proper choice typically isn’t always the simplest.

“You’ve got to move out of your comfort zone sometimes to chase your dream,” she remarked.

“It’s always been my ambition to come here and play basketball, to compete and play at the greatest level.”

Makurat is believed to be an immediate add-up for the Huskies with a want to stroke it from deep and strong court vision. Well, at least an instant-impact addition on offense.

Achievements In Recent Games

Last season, Anna managed to cope better than others.

The first player from Poland of The Huskies soon found out what was required of her and started to play well by the end of the regular season.

Last year, Makurat scored 7.9 points per game, ranking second in assists for the club (105) and subsequently tied for third in steals (47).

Then, she went a total of 1-for-13 throughout her career’s first three games and missed all ten 3-pointers she tried.

Adjusting her plodding movement to a considerably speedier American pace of play proved to be tough.

Improved And New Anna

Her coach, Auriemma, remarked, “Anna is completely different.”

She seems like a totally different person and a totally different player. Her preparation level is a complete 180 (degree) turn from last year.

“You can tell that she has been with the national team over in Poland for a few weeks. She moves so quickly and is so upbeat. Almost all of it is better.

After the players returned to campus, Makurat worked with Olivia Nelson-Ododa in a four-person pod. Nelson-Ododa commented that Makurat looks much more at ease and in shape.

The most exciting part, according to Nelson-Ododa, was witnessing how diligently she worked during the offseason and at home.

“Watching her become more at ease is always entertaining. I am so excited to watch her perform in the game this season.

The previous year, she claimed, she felt out of shape, and as a result, her worries about being exhausted on the court took precedence over her worries about basketball and the things she should be doing.

Makurat entered the league with a reputation as a good shooter after making a living playing professionally in Poland, but she has made just 31% of her shots (9 of 32 from 3-point range) and scores just 4.2 points per game on average.

She has, however, proven that she can move the ball. Her 26 assists are tied for the second-most on the team.

Spending the bulk of the spring and some of the summer at home helped her get in better shape, which can only be beneficial.
