Professional Career

Nationals of Washington (2010–13)

Barrett began the 2013 season with the Harrisburg Senators, a Class-AA team.

Following that, he worked with pitching coach Paul Menhart, who subsequently went on to become the Nationals’ minor league pitching coordinator.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Barrett joined the Nationals’ 40-man roster to begin his first season in the major league.

He was named to the Nationals’ Opening Day roster for the 2014 season after impressing everyone during spring training.

Similarly, Aaron’s first start was against the New York Mets, and he struck out two batters to get his first career win.

Following that, he quickly established himself as a valuable member of manager Matt Williams’ bullpen. As a result, in the National League Division Series, he was named to the Nationals’ playoff squad.

Barrett also had a wild pitch over the head of catcher Wilson Ramos in Game 4 of the series against the San Francisco Giants.

He’d also intentionally walked Pablo Sandoval, allowing Joe Panik to score the game’s winning run from third base.

Toward the middle of the season, Aaron began to feel pain in his right pitching elbow. As a result, on August 5, he had to give three earned runs to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Barrett was initially sent to the Class-AAA Syracuse Chiefs by the Nationals, but he was later placed on the disabled list due to an elbow ailment.

Surgery and Rehabilitation (Injury)

Barrett had a horrific, constant agony in his arm that numbed his fingers at first.

After being placed on the injured list, he had an examination, which revealed bone chips and a damaged ulnar collateral ligament. As a result, he underwent Tommy John surgery on September 4, 2015.

He had the ulnar collateral ligament of his left elbow transferred to his right arm, as well as many bone spurs removed from his elbow, during this procedure.

In December, he had the bone spurs on his ankle removed as well.

Barrett began pitching at a Florida practice facility in preparation for his return to game action when his exhausting rehab process came to an end.

On July 23, 2016, while recovering at the Nationals’ minor league camp in Viera, Florida, another horrific injury hit.

Barrett’s right humerus (the bone that connects the elbow to the shoulder) shattered while he was throwing during his career.

Many people heard the strange gunshot sound, which has lingered with the hurler. His wife was summoned shortly after, and she arrived on the field crying.

Mat Latos is said to have puked in the dugout, and Nationals manager Dusty Baker ensured that the film was only on a secured hard drive.

Barrett then underwent surgery with Dr. James Andrews, a well-known sports orthopedic physician.

Andrews compared the fracture to a catastrophic injury sustained in a vehicle accident.

Barrett’s armbone had two plates and sixteen screws placed in it at the end. Aaron was both astonished and distressed, and as a result, he made the following statement.

Barrett continued to train his arm despite the dark days and the severity of his injuries, expecting to return to baseball in 2017.

His arm, however, showed no signs of healing after a CT scan. As a result, he followed the doctor’s advice and stopped throwing.

Barrett signed a new minor league contract with the Nationals on April 3, 2017, despite never giving up hope of returning to the mound.

Because the contract was for two years, he didn’t play in any games in 2017, but he did begin minor league spring training with the Nationals in 2018.

In addition, he began his 2018 season on June 15 with the Short Season-A Auburn Doubledays after striking out two batters on hold. In addition, on November 2, he was elected as a free agent.

Despite this, he quickly signed a minor league contract with the Nationals, which included a non-roster invitation to spring training in the major leagues.

Return to Major League Baseball

After a long travel and privation, he was able to return to the majors he had left behind. It took a long time, but it was well worth it.

Barrett was assigned to Class-AA Harrisburg to begin the 2019 season after attending the Nationals’ major-league spring training camp in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Barrett began the year as the all-time leader in games saved for Harrisburg, with 41 spanning numerous seasons, as he recorded his fifteenth save of the season.

Barrett was busy building up his arm strength to reach his old velocity as the Nationals devised and implemented a strategy to prepare him for his comeback to the major leagues.

Barrett finished the season with a 2.75 earned run average and 31 saves (leading the minor leagues).

As a result, Harrisburg manager Matt LeCroy announced Barrett’s promotion to the Nationals for the first time in almost four years at the same moment.

Barrett was then signed by the Nationals on September 4, pitching a scoreless inning in relief against the Atlanta Braves and making three bullpen appearances with a 15.43 ERA in 2019.

As a result, the Nationals concluded the season with a 93-69 record, claiming a wild card position and eventually defeating the Astros in the 2019 World Series.

Barrett also won the world title, and on October 9, 2020, he became the sole owner of the Nationals’ 40-man roster. He was elected as a free agent the next day as a result.
