Experiencing paralysis

He was only eight years old at the time and a very active child. He awoke one night with leg discomfort and had to be transported to the hospital.

Guillian Barre syndrome is an autoimmune condition that causes your body to become paralyzed.

Chase may be out of the hospital in a week thanks to prompt medical attention, but he had to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility to guarantee his limbs were fully functional.

He found that a special pool therapy worked wonders for him. Kid Chase was freed from the hospital in only three months, compared to six to eight months for other patients.

The tenacious adolescent refused to utilize a wheelchair or walker, instead of finding his way around on his own.

Swimming

He employed swimming as therapy during his recovery. And, lo and behold, only a year later, he was back in the ring.

His athletic experience came in handy throughout his adventure. His siblings are all excellent swimmers.

Chase was primarily following in his older sister’s footsteps. She honed her skills at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where she was coached by the well-known Paul Yetter.

She had also set a number of national age-group records. “She was a natural,” the family adds.

Kalisz developed a competitive spirit as a result of his siblings’ friendly banter over their accomplishments. As a result, he began to train considerably more intensely, even joining the same aquatic club.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, his first Olympic race was also the first race in the pool. He finished second in the 400m IM with a time of 4.06.75, behind Japanese swimmer Kosuke Hagino, and won silver.
