Phil Booth

Phil Booth is a professional basketball player. Phil Booth went undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft and joined the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2019 NBA Summer League. As there was a place in the league for thoughtful players like Booth.

In his five years at Villanova, Phil has won six or seven state championships, three Big East regular-season championships, three Big East tournament championships, and two national championships.

Childhood and Parents

Phil Booth was born on December 31, 1995, in Baltimore, Maryland, to his parents, Phil Sr., and Robin Booth.

He is not the only child in the family; he grew up with two sisters, the identities of whom have yet to be released on the internet.

Phil’s transformation into a basketball superstar did not happen overnight.

It needed nights and days, as well as years of supervision and nurturing, for obvious reasons.

His father, Phil Sr., has been teaching him about the right play since he was seven years old: how to be unselfish, a good teammate, master the game, and lead.

Not only that, but as a young player, senior Booth made sure his son was enrolled in AAU programs.

He’d also drop him down at the field so he could play pickup games against older boys.

He didn’t know if he’d be able to nurture his son into a successful player as a father, but he never missed an opportunity to offer his all.

When Booth was approximately ten years old, he went to a camp in Maryland and was named MVP.

However, things were not always easy sailing; after a year of competing at Villanova, Booth and his team lost the championship to an overnight camp.

Booth was crying, cheering, and doing everything he could to help his team succeed. His parents also brought him to Villanova to watch him develop.

In addition, the scenario revealed to them that Booth enjoys the game in a subtle but fundamental way.

Father

And, if you’re wondering how Phil Sr. became so knowledgeable about the game, here’s the scoop: he grew up in Philadelphia and played basketball at Northeast High and Coppin State.

He was a swingman, to be precise, but he did not have the same opportunities as his son.

The elder Booth had been lightly recruited and did not want his son to follow in his footsteps.

Instead, he played for Ron “Fang” Mitchell at Gloucester Country College for a season.

Booth then followed the coach to Coppin State University in Baltimore, intending to demonstrate what a powerhouse in the 1980s and 1990s would look like, a powerhouse built on an Interstate-95 pipeline from Philadelphia.

In addition, Sr. Booth used to play with Mastbaum’s Derrick Orr, Southern’s Will Crandell, Lincoln’s Otto Barbour, Bartram’s Reggie Issac, and Dobbins’ Larry Stewart.

Likewise, he made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 1990 at the height of a season that had an upset win on the road at Maryland.

Talking about his mother, nothing much has been revealed, but she was an athlete too. Robin Smooth used to play at Bowie State.

While signing for an Exhibit 10 contract in 2019, a non-guaranteed contract that did not count toward the salary cap, he had a chance to make up to a $5-50k bonus nearly.

High School Career

Booth got enrolled at Mount Saint Joseph in Baltimore and played high school basketball there.

Phil was not forced to go over something which he did not want to. He had his pick of schools and was open to going anywhere. Joining Josephs was not a bad decision at all.

It was the best place for him to develop himself as a player. Phil was a part of a good team playing with good older guys.

Also, he knew that he would play behind great guys and learn a lot from them. And, we must say, he used his technique pretty much well.

Phil grabbed the 2013-14 Baltimore Prep Player of the Year and was also the first-team All-Catholic League selection. He also made the record for most points at his high school.

The starting point guard, Ryan Arcidiacono, regarded him as special and one of the best guards there.

Arcidiacono also tagged him as a smart, overall player who knows what the coach wants.

As soon as Phil came out of high school, Phil joined Villanova during the 2014-15 season and was all set to give his best potential for the team, Villanova Wildcats.

As a freshman, he managed to grab the Philadelphia Big Five rookie of the year at the end of the season. This clearly states that he instantly showed off his talent.

By the time Phil stepped into his sophomore year, he had impeccably made his mark for the 2015-16 season.

Likewise, he notched a team-high 20 points in the National Championship Game.

He hit two free throws with 35 seconds left in the game and also scored 7.0 points per game that season.

Well, the junior year did not turn out to be so good for him. Phil was forced to redshirt due to his unbearable knee pain and was only allowed to play three games.

Phil fractured his right hand in a play against Providence Friars Men’s Basketball Team on January 23, 2018.

This Maryland native made a comeback on February 21 when his squad won against DePaul Blue Demons men’s basketball, a 93-62 victory. He scored 14 points off the bench.

In the junior redshirt, Phil was again a part of the National Championship Game in 2018, where he won with Villanova for the second time in his collegiate career.

His playful caliber was quite harmed for a year because of that injury. Thus, he shot less and stood as a starter most of the time.

Phil averaged 18.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game moving onto his senior year.

Finest Leadership skills

Not mentioning this would be illegitimate, but Phil was the ninth player in Villanova history to complete his career with 1500 points and 300 assists. He also played in a school-record 148 games.

Phil had his own ups and downs while spending five seasons at Villanova, but he managed to become a fan-favorite real soon by taking part in the national championship game two times in 2016 and 2018.

Though in 2018, he was benched off the year in the middle with a lingering knee injury.

The audience, who were his fans, could not stop yelling “Booooth!” in Finneran Pavilion when he performed on the court. He portrayed a great compilation of leadership and competitiveness on and off the court.

Phil also teamed up with Eric Paschall to guide their younger teammates. Villanova coach Jay Wright also spoke a few good words in his favor.

Wright regarded him as an infrequent player who was well-liked.

Wright said of Booth, “He was a complete package of competitiveness and toughness.”

Not only that, but Phil also knew how to keep his personal and professional life different. He was great friends with Daniel Ochefu when he was a freshman.

But it was the weirdest thing how they turned out into real opponents on the court.

He was one of those special players who was liked and appreciated when he did not hold any Captain titles.

Phil literally nailed being a Villanova basketball player and knew every minor detail of what is important and considerate as a teammate.

Professional Career

No doubt he is coming out of high school; he had an excellent experience of the five-year journey, a crazy ride though, full of ups and downs, the titles, the championship, the winning, and the injuries; everything was worth it.

If there are highs, there are lows as well. After a magnificent career at Villanova, things did not go the same. Further, luck did not favor him enough in getting drafted.

Phil went undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft and joined the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2019 NBA Summer League.

As there was a place in the league for thoughtful players like Booth.

Following that, he agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Washington Wizards on July 26, 2019, but was waived soon. The same year, he also grabbed Robert V. Geasey Trophy.

However, Phil hoped that his time, experience, and refinement at Villanova wouldn’t go in vain and soon lead him to a productive NBA Career.

He had a small handful of team names that he worked hard for, such as Lakers, Pistons, Timberwolves, Cavaliers, Hawks, Mavericks, Pacers, Celtics, Knicks, and Sixers.

All in, Phil was waiting for a team to give him just one shot to prove himself. He also followed all the advice and was alerted by his coaches and former teammates.

Bring, here again; coach Jay Wright always demanded so much of him.

Capital City Go-Go (2019–2020)
