Dylan O’Brien discusses his new “Not Okay” character’s inspiration
What influences? “White tatted kids that talk with blaccents” and a former lover who used Gen Z slang.
When asked how he brought Colin to life after reading the screenplay, O’Brien said he did his research and based Colin on many Gen Z influencer stereotypes.
“I’ve always been taken aback by these white tatted kids who talk with blaccents as if they’re from the streets, appropriating Black culture, and being someone ‘we’ are thirsting for,” he says.
He said he was intrigued by the odd trend.
O’Brien then revealed that he got his character’s vocabulary and “vibe” from a girl he was dating rather than spending hours on TikTok FYP.
“I should have done more of that,” Dylan joked.
I was dating a girl that summer and learning a lot from her. She exuded that. She’d always say “OD as fuck” and “No cap, no cap.” “All these terms,” he added.
