3LW Denies Copyright Suing Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift
  • Swift was accused by Sean Hall and Nathan Butler of stealing the lines “Playas gon’ play and haters, they gon’ hate” from the 2001 song “Playas Gon’ Play” to use in her song.
  • The songwriter’s Hall and Butler accused Swift of stealing lyrics from 3LW’s ‘Playas Gon’ Play,’ but the artist stated that she had never heard of the group before being sued.
  • Swift recently responded to a 2017 copyright lawsuit by denying the accusation, writing in an August 6 declaration, “The lyrics to ‘Shake It Off’ were entirely written by me.”
  • In her declaration, she also stated that she wore an Urban Outfitters shirt with the phrase “haters going to hate” while performing at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards — a year before she wrote, “Shake It Off.”

Taylor Swift, the greatest singer of all time, is being sued for copyright by the songwriters of ‘Playas Gon’ Play,’ which was sung by the 3LW acronym for 3 Little Women.

3LW is backing singer Taylor Swift in her fight against the ‘Shake It Off‘ lawsuit. The girl group recently retweeted the original tweet from December 10, 2021

“Attention: It is not 3LW who is suing Taylor Swift,” the tweet said.

The composers are (Nate and Sean). Taylor and her team have my undying love and respect.”

“Taylor is a talented artist who has made her mark!” said the post.

This case had nothing to do with 3LW. Please direct any venom elsewhere. We admire Taylor’s fans’ dedication to her.”

“It has nothing to do with me,” Kiely Williams, a member of 3LW, added [via Instagram].

We did not write ‘Playas Gon’ Play,’ and I am not defending Adrienne or Naturi in any way, but it is true. So don’t visit their website. Nothing should be said. No one is suing her.”

Swift recently responded to a 2017 copyright lawsuit by denying the accusation, writing in an August 6 declaration, “The lyrics to ‘Shake It Off’ were entirely written by me.”

According to documents obtained by E! News, the singer stated, “Until learning about the Plaintiffs’ claim in 2017, I had never heard the song ‘Playas Gon’ Play and had never heard of that song or the group 3LW.

This was the first time I heard the song after this claim was made.”

Additionally, though 3LW released several modest hits, Swift wrote that she almost exclusively listened to country music during that time and did not watch the MTV show TRL.

“The only concerts I went to were for country and folk rock singers, LeAnn Rimes, Billy Gilman, and Melissa Etheridge,” she explained.

Swift went on to say, “My parents limited what I could watch and listen to, and did not allow me to watch TRL until I was about 13 years old.”

Similarly, Swift testified that “players going to play and haters going to hate” were common phrases uttered by others, including her classmates, when she attended school in Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

The phrase is also used and can be heard in the song ‘The Outsiders‘ by Eric Church.

In her declaration, she also stated that she wore an Urban Outfitters shirt with the phrase “haters going to hate” while performing at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards — a year before she wrote, “Shake It Off.”

“I co-wrote ‘Shake It Off’ with Karl Martin Sandberg, professionally known as Max Martin, and Karl Johan Schuster, professionally known as Shellback, in February 2014 at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles,” she stated in the declaration.

“I can and do confirm that ‘Shake It Off’ was composed independently of ‘Playas Gon’ Play,” she added.
