He’s also a fantastic passer, having been one of the finest steal artists in the NCAA while at Montana. For a PG, he has excellent ball sense and contributes effectively to the glass.

Will also played large minutes for the majority of his career while mostly protecting the opposing team’s greatest player.

Injury

After apparently injuring his foot in late 2012, Will, a previous top defender for Montana and a candidate for conference player of the year, was out for 6-8 weeks.

This had an impact on the Big Sky Conference battle all the way down to the national level.

It was a broken foot, according to Missoula reporter Shaun Rainey’s tweets. This type of injury ruined his season and limited his ability to perform at the high level he had previously shown.

Damian Lillard, a former Big Sky teammate who went on to be picked first overall in the NBA Draft following a strong season in the Big Sky, was an inspiration for Cherry.

His goal that year was to replicate the accomplishment, and he was already considered a candidate for conference player of the year and one of the top 100 players in the country.

Controversy

In 2013, a former Montana guard was jailed for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in downtown Missoula.

Keron DeShields, a sophomore guard, and a third male were also detained by Missoula police.

Jason Shawn Snyder was charged with marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia, while DeShields was charged with disorderly conduct.

On April 27, at 2:04 a.m., an event occurred in a Front Street tavern.

Local cops arrived at a complaint of a brawl between the three men, and Cherry – a three-time All-Big Sky selection – had to be tased before submitting, according to the Missoulian.

He sat in jail for an hour without being charged, and he has no prior criminal record. He was later released since there was no reason to arrest him, according to Cherry.
