Cole was chosen first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2011 MLB draft.

The Pittsburgh Pirates gave him the largest rookie bonus ever, $8 million for a minor league deal.

Later that year, he trained with the Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League’s Class A-Advanced division.

He subsequently joined the Class AA Eastern League’s Altoona Curve.

Finally, on August 29, 2012, the Pirates sent him to the Class AAA International League’s Indianapolis Indians.

Both of the Pirates’ top players, James McDonald and Wandy Rodrguez, were injured in 2013.

Cole earned his Major League debut as a result.
