Wesley Matthews

Wesley Matthews is an American professional basketball player. Wesley Matthews currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a basketball player for the Marquette Golden Eagles in college.

The Marquette standout is deadly from all five positions on the floor, so defenses must keep a watch on him. Especially in the left-hand corner.

Early Years and Family

Wesley Matthews was born in San Antonio, Texas, on October 14, 1986. Wesley Sr. is his father’s name, and Pam Moore is his mother’s name.

Wesley’s memories of the “Showtime” Lakers are as foggy as his memories of his father as a boy.

When his father, Magic Johnson’s undersized 6-1 backup point guard, won his second championship ring, he was just two years old.

He was three years old when his parents divorced in 1989, and his father went to play basketball in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and the Philippines for the following eight years, leaving Pam to raise Wesley on her alone.

The player owes his mother a huge debt of gratitude. Pam worked three jobs as a single mother to supply him with stuff he didn’t need.

According to the player, a single job would have sufficed to provide him with shelter, food, and clothing.

His mother, on the other hand, went above and beyond. They were always jammed up against each other.

Wesley claims that his mother made every effort to be a mother and a father.

Net Worth & Salary

Wesley Matthews’s net worth is estimated to be $36 million.

On July 10, 2010, Matthews signed a five-year, $34 million contract with the Trail Blazers.

On July 9, 2015, they agreed to a four-year, $70 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

His salary for the year 2021/22 is estimated to be $1,958,495.

Sporting Household

Wesley’s family is known for having athletic genes. Learn more about Wesley’s family, who are also basketball champs, by reading on.

The father of Wesley

A former NBA player, the player’s father is also a former NBA player. His father attended Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and graduated in 1977.

When the Washington Bullets selected him with the 14th choice in the 1980 NBA draft, he was a 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) point guard from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Matthew’s father played for the Bullets, Atlanta Hawks (twice), Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, and Los Angeles Lakers during his nine-year NBA career.

Matthews Sr. also competed in the Continental Basketball Association and the United States Basketball League.

He also spent the 1989–90 season in Italy with Ranger Varese before being called up by the Hawks for a single regular-season game.

In 1991, he won the best import title with Ginebra San Miguel in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). In 1996, Matthews Sr. announced his retirement from pro basketball.

Sister of Weasley

Matthews’ sister, Angela Rodriguez, is also a basketball player.

She is a 173cm American/Mexican Combo Guard who graduated from the Milwaukee Panthers and has played in Poland and Germany.

Angela is a member of the Mexican National Team as well. In addition to GWBAA, she has performed professionally in Iceland, Poland, Romania, and Spain.

She was also chosen to the Horizon League Preseason All-Conference Team and the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team by College Sports Madness.

The mother of Weasley

Pam was also a standout basketball player at Madison Memorial High School, scoring 50 points and getting 50 rebounds in one game.

She went on to the University of Wisconsin, where as a freshman in 1977-78, she was the team’s best scorer and rebounder.

She was also a four-time All-American in the 400 meters and was just inducted into the Wisconsin Hall of Fame. Her passion for basketball, on the other hand, shone out.

Career in College

Despite pressure from his father to play for the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Matthews elected to attend Marquette University.

Marquette’s “three amigos,” the three guards that started the game, were the tallest of the three. From their first year on, Dominic James, Jerel McNeal, and Matthews attended practically every game together.

Wesley learned to play against bigger opponents during the 2008–09 season at Marquette because of his lack of height.

He also developed into one of the most dominant players in the country when it came to driving to the basket.

He collected 13 rebounds in Marquette’s 48-point triumph over Division II opponent Lewis Flyers on December 28, 2005.

Similarly, on December 16, 2008, the athlete scored a career-high 30 points against the Tennessee Volunteers, converting 15 of 18 free throws.

Furthermore, on January 7, 2009, Wesley set a school record for field goal accuracy (minimum ten attempts), going 10-for-10 on the way to 23 points in an 81–76 win over Rutgers.

Wesley in the role of “Mama’s Boy”

Matthews is quick to contradict anyone who wants to write his tale as an NBA player’s son who followed in his father’s footsteps, as much as others want to ascribe his success to his father’s.

Matthews has no ill feelings toward his father, with whom he has just developed a bond. The athlete, on the other hand, claims that such a story would be false and neglect the real reason he is in the NBA.

Wesley didn’t pick up a basketball and begin playing because he aspired to be like his father; he did so to emulate his mother.

Pam, the player’s mother, made it a point to play basketball with her son on the hoop she had set up outside their home.

Pam wouldn’t just pat her son on the back as other mothers did when they played one-on-one and went through drills. She’d also take on the character of the absent father and become personal with him.

Wesley’s peers mocked him and called him a “mama’s boy” because he spent so much time with his mother as a child, a label he disliked at the time but has learned to appreciate now.

He adores his mother so much that when he turned 18, he got her initials tattooed on his arm.

“Dynamic Duo” is written in cursive above a basketball on the player’s left biceps, along with his initials, “WM,” and his mother’s initials, “PM.”

Professional Basketball Career

After being undrafted in the 2009 NBA draft, the Marquette standout spent the summer with the Utah Jazz in the Orlando Summer League and the Sacramento Kings in the Las Vegas Summer League.

On July 10, 2010, the Trail Blazers signed Wesley to a five-year contract.

In his debut season with Portland, the athlete averaged 15.9 points per game and improved his three-point percentage from 38 percent to 41 percent.

On July 9, 2015, the athlete signed a four-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

In January 2019, he became the first undrafted player in NBA history (and the 31st overall) to make 1,500 3-pointers.

Years Later

On February 10, 2019, Wesley signed with the Indiana Pacers.

On February 22, he led the Pacers to a comeback victory over the New Orleans Pelicans with 24 points and six three-pointers.

On July 12, 2019, Matthews signed with the Bucks. In a game against the Utah Jazz in November 2019, the player scored 19 points and collected four rebounds while standing in for injured All-Star Khris Middleton.

Similarly, on December 22, he scored 19 points in a win over his former team, the Indiana Pacers.

The athlete then signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. With the Lakers, he competed in 58 games before returning to the Bucks in 2021.

Setbacks and Injuries

Wesley played in 250 consecutive NBA games until being forced to miss one on December 10, 2012, due to a left hip ailment.

The nickname “Iron Man” was given to the player because of his abilities and willingness to play through minor injuries and suffering.

Trail Blazers fans, television and radio analysts, and arena public address announcers all gave him the nickname.

On March 5, 2015, the player tore his left Achilles tendon in a game against the Dallas Mavericks. The footballer had to have surgery on his left leg to repair a damaged Achilles tendon.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Richard Ferkel of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute. After the surgery, the player was placed on bed rest and was suspended for the remainder of the season.

Wesley was also ejected from a game against the Golden State Warriors on November 23, 2013, along with teammate Mo Williams.

In 25 minutes of activity, he ended with 23 points. It was stated on November 25 that he had been fined $20,000 for his actions.
