Valeria Vegas is a journalist, documentary filmmaker, essayist, and producer from Spain. Valeria Vegas is most recognized for her work on Manuel Rodrguez, a Chilean melodrama, and HBO’s Veneno.

Vegas is the author of “Free Yourself: The LGTBQ Culture in Spain” and “Not a Whore, Not a Saint: The Memories of La Veneno,” among other works.

Early life and Childhood

Valeria Vegas was born in Valencia, Spain, on August 8, 1985, as a signed male.

Vegas loved Spanish trans superstar Cristina “La Veneno” Ortiz as a teenager and traveled to Madrid to meet her.

Vegas was motivated by Cristina to make her own gender transformation.

Education Details

Valeria spent her formative years in or near Valencia, where she studied journalism at a local college.

She studied Audiovisual Communication as a major.

Professional Career

Vegas started working professionally in the late 1990s. Her debut novel came out in 2015.

Since then, she’s published a number of publications, including “Dressed in Blue: A Social and Cinematographic Analysis of Transsexual Women in the Years of the Spanish Transition” in 2019 and “Libérate” in 2020.

In 2016, she wrote “Not a Whore, Not a Saint: The Memories of La Veneno,” a book based on the life of her great friend and mentor Cristina “La Veneno” Ortiz, who passed away in November.

Veneno, a coming-of-age drama series based on the memoir, will premiere on HBO Max in March 2020.

Vegas was heavily involved in the show’s development and was advised to ensure a realistic portrayal of “La Veneno’s” existence.

She has also written for several TV series and documentaries, including Manuel Rodrguez: Guerrillero del Amor, a Chilean telenovela, and Nios del Paraso, a 2000 documentary.

Valeria began appearing on chat shows such as Sálvame Deluxe once her career took off. She has also appeared on Hormigas Blancas, Un Ao de Tu Vida, and La hour de La 1 as a panelist.
