Career in College

In his freshman season at Indiana, Troy started all 32 games, averaging 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 50.9 percent from the floor.

On March 10, 2014, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Troy started 28 of the 32 games he played as a sophomore in 2014–15. He was selected Big Ten Player of the Week on December 22.

He was also named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on December 23.

At the end of the season, he was also given honorable mention All-Big Ten. He had 7.4 rebounds per game and was third on the squad with 13.0 points per game.

Troy considered entering the 2015 NBA draft following his sophomore season but instead chose to return to Indiana for his junior season.

Troy entered the NBA draft on May 25, 2016, foregoing his last year of college eligibility.

NBA Career

After going undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft, Troy signed with the Phoenix Suns for the 2016 NBA Summer League.

In six games at Las Vegas, he averaged three rebounds, 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 22.2 minutes per game. On August 8, 2016, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Williams earned a spot on the Grizzlies’ opening-night roster after impressing the team during training camp and the preseason.

He made his Grizzlies debut on October 29, 2016, in the Grizzlies’ second game, a 111–104 loss to the New York Knicks.

In nine minutes off the bench, he had three points, one assist, and two steals.

He scored 18 points in a 110–107 win over the Miami Heat on November 26, 2016.

On January 30, 2017, the Grizzlies waived him. Williams was assigned to the NBA Development League’s Iowa Energy on several times during his stay with Memphis.

Houston Rockets vs. Iowa Energy

Williams was acquired by Iowa Energy on February 3, 2017, after being waived by the Grizzlies. On February 18, 2017, he won the 2017 D-League Dunk Contest.

On March 10, 2017, Troy signed a 10-day deal with the Houston Rockets and was assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Despite not playing in a game during his 10-day deal, he signed a contract extension with the Rockets on March 20, 2017.

On April 2, 2017, he was called up from the D-League and scored 18 of his career-high 21 points in the first half of the Rockets’ 123–116 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

On July 25, 2017, Williams re-signed with the Rockets. He was waived on February 14, 2018, to make place for newly acquired Joe Johnson.

Troy signed a 10-day contract with the New York Knicks on February 21, 2018, and a multi-year contract with the Sacramento Kings on March 13, 2018.

Due to a broken jaw, the Knicks confirmed on April 2 that he will miss the rest of the season. On July 16, 2018, the Knicks officially waived him.

On July 27, 2018, Williams signed with the New Orleans Pelicans, although the team later dismissed him on October 17, 2018.

On October 20, the professional basketball player signed a two-way contract with the Stockton Kings, the Sacramento Kings’ G League club.

On October 27, 2019, Williams was added to the Northern Arizona Suns’ training camp roster.

Pesaro Carpegna Prosciutto Basket

On December 12, 2019, Williams signed a one-year contract with Carpegna Prosciutto Basket Pesaro in the Italian Serie A.

He opted to leave the team on March 9, 2020, after all, basketball tournaments were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Injury

In the fourth quarter of the Pistons’ 115-109 loss in 2018, Troy Williams shattered his jaw and missed the remainder of the season.
