We’re all aware that internet gaming is thriving right now. We selected our final shortlist from millions of titles by weighing influence, originality, legacy, societal impact, critical reception, and long-term playability.
Of course, these kinds of endeavors are always subject to subjective interpretation.
Oh, one more thing. This list is not in any particular order because that is a topic for another discussion.
Table of Contents
1. Dark Souls III –
Dark Souls route to popular recognition was as twisted as the horrors lurking in Demon Ruins, from cult classic to sleeping behemoth to one of the most important action RPGs of a generation.
So many games exist due to Dark Souls ten years after its release, and developer FromSoftware is already a household name thanks to its 2011 popularity.
2. Super Mario World –
Super Mario World is a simple game to describe.
It’s a Super Mario game, so you know what that means: mushrooms, fantastic running and leaping action, and a vast, secret-filled world to explore.
But it’s Super Mario World’s alluring complexity that distinguishes it from other 2D Mario games.
Following Super Mario titles, such as the New Super Mario Bros. series, simplified the overworld, substituting linear tracks for the fascinating secret passageways of Super Mario World’s vertical levels and generally abandoning the skies and treetops of Super Mario World’s vertical levels in favor of ground-based obstacle courses.
3. Minecraft –
After being released as a work in progress in the summer of 2009, knowledge of this weird blocky simulation spread swiftly on PC gaming forums.
A horde of enthusiastic modders flocked around the project, downloading Persson’s version but modifying it with their own rules and artwork.
Minecraft has always been a team effort, a labor of love shared by both the developer and the players.
By the time Minecraft was completely released in November 2011, it had 10 million registered players.
4. The Legend of Zelda:
Ocarina of Time – Ganondorf, King of the Gerudo Thieves, dupes Link as a child.
The evil human uses Link to enter the Sacred Realm, where he corrupts Triforce and turns Hyrule into a barren wasteland.
Link is determined to right the wrongs he helped to create, so he journeys through time with the help of Rauru, gaining the powers of the Seven Sages.
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild maintains the spirit of the original Zelda from 1986 while giving everything required for a modern-day mega-hit.
The vast open-world landscape is packed with breathtaking views and surprises waiting to be explored.

The characters seemed to erupt from the screen.
The riddles are plentiful and entertaining.
Then there’s the story, which rivals any game in terms of what it says as well as how it expresses it.
Doom was not the first first-person shooter, but it is often regarded as the most influential.
When id Software unleashed this carnage-fest on an unsuspecting globe in 1993, everything changed.
It contributed to the definition of gaming in the 1990s by laying the groundwork for a wave of demonic shooters.
It gave many gatekeepers of popular culture a new way to criticize video games.
While many people recall Doom as one of the most contentious video games ever created, we prefer to remember it for what it accomplished.
7. The Legend of Zelda:
A Link in Time – Link’s quest was laid out in The Legend of Zelda and Link’s Adventure, but A Link to the Past converted Hyrule into a world.
Link to the Past established a new standard for dungeons, exploration, and storytelling.
From the remarkable beginnings of guiding a swordless Link through the rain through the confrontation with Ganon and using the mastery of weapon and bow to destroy evil, this interesting story was nearly unheard of at the time.
8. Half-Life 2 –
Video game alien invasion stories abound.
Nonetheless, Half-Life 2 is so good that it makes the entire notion seem fresh and horrifying.
Gordon Freeman awakens to find the Earth completely overrun by the Combine army, but a resistance movement is growing.
The innovative environmental puzzles and well-known gravity guns use the complicated physics engine to make this horrible world feel genuine.
You loathe your enemies and live every second of your life—one of the best story-driven computer games ever created.

10. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – We didn’t see this one coming.
With two Witcher games under its belt, CDPR’s third main entry had to live up to expectations – but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt well exceeded them.
TW3 offers it all: a deep, believable world, a flawed hero and companions who both love and despise him, and adventures that will make you laugh and cry.
