Why did Tom Brady Briefly Retire?

While Tom Brady’s decision to retire from the NFL, which he subsequently reversed a few weeks later, was met with sadness by fans of the game, there must have been a few stars of the game who saw it as an opportunity to step out of the 44-year-enormous old’s shadow.

The former New England Patriots quarterback has been a fixture in the NFL for almost two decades and is something of a measuring stick for other quarterbacks.

As a result, it’s possible that Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow were ready to step up in the absence of the seven-time Super Bowl champion.

Brady, it turns out, hasn’t disappeared and will be a major force to be reckoned with in 2022.

Indeed, with the veteran at the helm, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are among the favorites to win the Super Bowl, while some teams may mount a challenge.

NFL Draft as a result of their two second-round picks following Devante Adams’ potentially significant loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Cincinnati Bengals, who made a surprise run to the Super Bowl last year thanks largely to Joe Burrow’s exploits, are another squad trying to go all the way.

The 25-year-old will seek to go one better in 2022, and he has his own beliefs about why Tom Brady declared, and then reversed, his retirement from the NFL.

“He’s playing far too good right now to give up.”

“I believe he wanted to end the conversation.”

Because if he didn’t declare his retirement, everyone would be wondering, ‘Is he retiring, or is he not retiring?’

So I believe he did it to get everyone off his back and give him time to think about it.”

That’s an intriguing notion with some merit.

Another reason he might have left briefly was to see what the Bucs would do about head coach Bruce Arians.

By all accounts, Brady wasn’t happy with the way things were going, and the fact that he returned to the game, and more importantly, to Raymond James Stadium, after Arians were fired is telling.

Burrow is correct on one thing, and that is that Brady is playing too well to retire.

The veteran quarterback put up his finest stats last season, and he’s still very fit and capable of mixing it with the young guns, so why call it quits when you still have gas in the tank?

Tom Brady, on the other hand, has made post-playing preparations in recent weeks.

He has reportedly secured a contract worth $375 million to become a Fox Sports NFL commentator, though it is unclear when this arrangement would go into effect.

Perhaps if Brady leads Tampa Bay to its seventh Super Bowl victory, the timing will be appropriate for him to call it a career.
