Tito Trinidad

Tito Trinidad is a legendary former boxer from Puerto Rico. Tito Trinidad was a professional wrestler from 1990 through 2008. Throughout the decade, he was, however, one of the most underappreciated boxers in the world.

The boxing legend began his career at a young age and battled for nearly two decades

. He was a two-time World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation champion.

Early Years and Family

Tito Trinidad was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, on January 10, 1973. Felix Trinidad Sr. and Irma Doris Trinidad were his parents.

Tito has a sister, Luz M. Trinidad, in addition to his parents.

When Tito was a child, the family moved to Cupey Alto, a neighborhood in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Without a doubt, Tito was destined to be a boxer.

His involvement in boxing since the age of 12 demonstrates his passion for the sport.

It was given to Tito by his father. In the 1970s, Felix Trinidad Sr. was a featherweight champion.

He taught Tito how to box and instilled in him a passion for the sport.

Tito also began boxing shortly after his father’s career ended.

For years, Ramos served as Tito’s English-Spanish interpreter. Since 1991, he has also been Tito’s investment advisor.

Apart from their professional relationships, Ramos was a close family friend of Tito’s. Ramos was also Tito’s best man at his wedding.

Ramos, on the other hand, was in charge of managing a substantial percentage of Tito’s earnings, which amounted to $85 million.

He was also singled out by Trinidad and his family as the sole culprit of the heinous investment scheme.

Career in Professional Boxing

Tito made his professional boxing debut at the age of 17 on March 10, 1990.

Weighted Welter

He battled another newcomer, boxer Angel Romero, as a rookie. Tito won the fight in the second round via knockout. After that, he knocked out nine of his ten opponents.

Trinidad’s fights became more serious as he faced up against more experienced and well-trained opponents like Jake Rodriguez and Raul Gonzalez.

On December 6, 1991, Tito was pitted against Jake Rodriguez.

He also won the fight by unanimous decision. Felix, on the other hand, sustained an injury to his right hand during the fight.

He then took a five-month hiatus to recover from the injuries, at a time when his career was just beginning to take off.

Trinidad also defeated IBF welterweight champion Maurice Blocker and was awarded the title. This win paved the way for him to become a regular on Showtime Championship Boxing.

He successfully defended his title for the next three years, defeating a number of opponents.

Camacho vs. Trinidad

On January 29, 1994, Tito fought Hector Camacho in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, he sustained a cut over his left eye during the fight.

Despite this, he was declared the winner by a unanimous vote. He received scores of 117–109, 116–110, and 119–106 from the judges.

Trinidad vs. Campas

Trinidad fought against Yori Boy Campas on September 17, 1994. He traveled to the MGM Grand so that he could defend the title.

With a record of 56-0, Campas scored a knockdown in the second round. This was the second knockdown in Tito’s career.

Moreover, Tito injured Campas’ face and broke his nose. He happened to be the first person to have defeated Campas, giving him his first career loss.

Trinidad vs. Oba Carr

Tiro fought against the undefeated Oba Carr in his fourth fight in the United States. In the second round, Carr scored a knockdown against Tito via a quick right-hand punch.

However, Tito continued the fight, injuring Carr with a punch. He scored three knockdowns before a technical knockout stopped the fight.

For four years, Tito defended his title against numerous fighters in Showtime’s fights.

Felix demonstrated his skills, dominating and injuring Zulu with punches on his head and body. Zulu then fell and made efforts to raise.

However, the referee stopped the fight before Zulu could rise.

Trinidad vs. Whitaker

Trinidad fought for his welterweight championship against Pernell Whitaker on February 20, 1999. He won the bout by unanimous decision.

The victory was his thirteenth successful defense.

Both Tito and Whitaker demonstrated excessive pushing, used their jabs, and attacked each other. As a result, the judges provided them with 117–111, 118–109, and 118–109.

Trinidad vs. De La Hoya

Trinidad fought against Oscar De la Hoya in the spring of 1999. They exchanged punches and pressured each other.

Trinidad’s eyes grew puffy, and his nose also started bleeding. Despite this, he took the remaining two rounds of the fight.

Middleweight Lightweight

Trinidad moved to the light-middleweight class after vacating the welterweight titles in 2000.

He subsequently went up against David Reid, the World Boxing Associations champion.

In the eighth, ninth, and tenth rounds, Tito dominated the fight, opening a cut above Reid’s eye. In addition, he dominated the eleventh round with three knockdowns.

Highlights from Trinidad vs. Vargas

On December 2, 2000, Tito fought Fernando Vargas, the junior middleweight champion of the International Boxing Federation, in a unification bout.

Initially, Tito had the upper hand in the fight.

In the second round, however, he received a cut over his right eye. In the fourth round, Tito was likewise knocked out by Vargas, who struck him in the jaw.

Despite this, Trinidad recovered control in the sixth round and continued to do so throughout the fight.

Joppy vs. Trinidad

As a result of his participation in Don King’s middleweight unification tournament, Tito was promoted to middleweight.

Keith Holmes of the WBC, Bernard Hopkins of the IBF, and William Joppy of the WBA competed in the tournament.

Tito was supposed to face Joppy in a battle. In the fifth round of the tournament, he defeated Joppy via technical knockout.

In the second round, he scored a knockdown, and then in the fourth and fifth rounds, he scored a knockdown. The fight was subsequently interrupted by the referee, despite Joppy’s attempts to prolong it.

Hopkins vs. Trinidad

On September 15, 2001, Trinidad was slated to battle Hopkins. Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, thus the fight could not take place.

After then, the bout was rescheduled for September 29. The fight started slowly but picked up speed in the later rounds.

After the twelfth round, though, Tito’s father entered the ring, generating a commotion. The fight was eventually interrupted by a technical knockout by the referee.

Mayorga vs. Trinidad

On March 2, 2004, Tito fought Ricardo Mayorga at Madison Square Garden. He finally caught up in the fifth round after injuring his opponent and causing a slash under his eye.

On the other hand, he had a lot of knockouts in the first eight rounds. Mayorga, on the other hand, got off to a great start after two knockouts.

After the third knockdown, Tito won the fight via technical knockout.

Winky Wright vs. Trinidad

On May 14, 2005, Tito challenged Winky Wright for the World Boxing Council’s number one challenger championship in the Middleweight division.

Wright, on the other hand, won the fight by decision. He received 120-107 and 119-108 from the judges on two occasions.

Tito’s father, who had trained, managed, and stood by him, decided not to be in his corner any longer. Tito then went into a semi-retirement period.

Jones Jr. vs. Trinidad

On January 19, 2008, Tito faced former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. He was victorious in the first two rounds.

Jones, on the other hand, won all of the subsequent rounds. As a result, the judge named Jones Jr. the winner by a unanimous vote. They also gave him 117–109 and 116–110 scores twice.

Retirement

After his fight with Jones Jr., Tito was away from fighting for a long time. Similarly, he initially made no announcement before finally announcing his retirement on October 12, 2009.

Tito, likewise, stated that he was between 95 and 98 percent convinced that he would never box again.

He was then seen making public appearances, attending boxing matches, and engaging in other public activities.

Furthermore, in July 2009, Felix worked as a guest referee for the World Wrestling Council. He later became involved in a plot that featured Orlando Colón.

Tito also expressed interest in buying the Changos de Naranjito in 2010.

Hopkins’ entourage paid a visit to Tito’s dressing area before the fight to observe Tito’s taping as part of a typical boxing routine.

They alleged, however, that Tito’s hands were not properly bandaged. They threatened to call off the fight unless he rewrapped it perfectly.

The Chief Inspector of NYSAC insisted that Trinidad’s camp rewrap his hands properly without forming a direct link between the tape and the skin, according to Hopkins’ trainer Bouie Fisher.

Hall of Fame for International Boxing

In 2019, Tito was declared eligible for induction into the Boxing Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame’s 2014 Class.

He was also officially inducted into it on June 4, 2014, during a ceremony.

Trinidad was the tenth Puerto Rican to be honored in this way.

In terms of his private life, Tito Trinidad is married to Sharon Santiago.

When the Trinidad family moved to Cupey Alto, the couple met for the first time.

Tito’s classmate was Sharon’s neighbor/friend, and they first met at that friend’s house.

Trinidad was completely enamored with Sharon’s beautiful attitude.

He even made an attempt to impress her with his red Ford Mustang.

As a result, Felix tried everything he could with the support of their old acquaintance to grab her attention.

Sharon’s family, on the other hand, first disputed the relationship

. When her mother noticed Trinidad becoming agitated at her neighbor’s house, she alerted her mother.

Trinidad was an athlete, and the profession was necessarily subjected to violence, fostering a terrible public image. Similarly, Sharon’s father objected to the connection because Trinidad was an athlete.

Fortunately, all the odds were stacked against the couple, and they were able to marry.
