Terry was hired as the Phillies’ manager after the 1996 season. During his first four seasons as captain, the club never finished higher than a third.

He also worked as a special assistant for the Cleveland Indians in 2000, as well as a bench coach for the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics.
