Stephen Curry’s Campaign for Social Justice and Pandemic Awareness
Stephen Curry of GSW will earn the NAACP’s Jackie Robinson Sports Award this year in appreciation of his contributions off the court.
He is being recognized for his ongoing support for social justice, women’s causes, and youth projects.
Furthermore, for his efforts to raise public awareness about the coronavirus pandemic.
His campaigns for the aforementioned causes, as well as his interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci about COVID, have earned him praise from civil rights leaders.
As a result of his diligent efforts, he earns the Jackie Robinson Sports Award.
“To describe Steph and his leadership, I’d use a Maya Angelou quote:
‘I’ve learned that people will forget what you said and what you did.
However, people will remember how you made them feel,'” Warriors general manager Bob Myers told the Associated Press.
“Steph has undoubtedly made many in the Bay Area and around the world happy.”
“His devotion to social activism and support for women is part of the fabric that makes him who he is.”
“I’m proud to know him for what he does on and off the court,” Myers continued.
“He has a strong platform, and he makes the most of it,” Curry’s colleague Kelly Oubre Jr. said. “He’s a wonderful person.”
Thank you for the honor and recognition, Stephen.
“Winning this prize is both humbling and honoring.”
It took me by surprise in terms of what you do in the community and what you believe in.
It’s about a team effort, not just myself, but everyone around me in terms of accountability to change,” Curry explained.
“You don’t do it for the recognition; it’s more about the work that you’re doing.”
That this is an excellent time to continue discussing important issues.
And remember Jackie Robinson’s legacy, what he stood for, and the change he was able to bring about.
And the walls he was able to break down and the dialogues he was able to continue,” Curry continued.
“So I’m grateful for the recognition and honor, and it gives me more inspiration and energy to keep changing things in terms of what needs to happen for the Black community across the country, then I’m all for it.”
Curry’s former colleague and NBA star Shaun Livingston also congratulated him on his success.
Rick Welts, the Warriors’ Chief Operating Officer, also congratulates him on the honor.
Stephen has always been an outspoken advocate for women’s equality and has backed the WNBA in its efforts to promote social justice and protect Black lives and culture.
The NAACP now acknowledges and honors the work of WNBA players with the award.
The honor was also given to the WNBA Players Association.
The NAACP recognized the WNBA players’ association for their coordinated activism in support of social and racial justice.
WNBA players have been praised for their protests, which include kneeling during the national anthem and messages supporting Black Lives Matter.
Also for opposing the August shooting of Jacob Blake.
“I am very proud of the WNBA players for this well-deserved recognition of their ongoing action and commitment for social justice and equality,”
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement to the Associated Press.
“Their platforms are much broader than basketball, and they serve as fantastic role models for the next generation of athletes and leaders.”
The WNBA Social Justice Council’s critical work continues, and you can ‘Count’ on more from the players.”
Steph has also lauded the WNBA players for their efforts.
“Recognition of the WNBA and what they’ve stood for.”
“And their use of their platform to be bold and courageous and speak for change at every opportunity is well deserved,” Curry said.
“They are game changers and leaders in terms of collective voice and influence on and off the court,
so salute to them and everything they’ve done and continue to do in terms of leadership and using their voice.”
Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who is outspoken on a variety of causes, admires the WNBA players for their advocacy.
“I admire what the WNBA players have accomplished.
“They’ve really taken the lead with innovation and togetherness in a lot of critical causes, political causes but also issues of social injustice,” Kerr remarked.
