The world is aware of India’s delayed legal system. The obscenity case against Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and Hollywood actor Richard Gere has been pending in Indian courts since 2007. Last week, this insignificant case was dismissed.
She was found not guilty on all counts by the judge.
The religiously fanatical petitioner had squandered valuable court time and national funds when that time could have been used to deal with more pressing matters.
Shilpa Shetty was cleared of obscenity allegations in 2007
Shilpa Shetty, a Bollywood actress, and Richard Gere, a Hollywood actor, appeared on stage in 2007 for an AIDS awareness event.
Richard Gere kissed her cheek several times at the moment.
Hindu right-wing groups took offense and filed a lawsuit against both performers for disrespecting “Indian values.”
Her lawsuit has been pending in court for 15 years!!! It was finally settled in a Bombay court last week.
The court order was made public. The Judge declared that her case was without merit.
Richard Gere made unwanted amorous approaches to her.
The order stated: “It appears that… She is the victim of an alleged act of accused No. 1 (Richard Gere),”
She has yet to officially respond to this court order.
Her counsel claimed that the entire issue stemmed from the fact that she did not object when the co-accused kissed her.
The lawyer added: “By no stretch of the imagination does this constitute her a conspirator or perpetrator of any crime,”
The incident of 2007
The incident occurred during an AIDS awareness event in 2007 She shared the stage with Hollywood A-lister Richard Gere.
Richard kissed her hand, then drew her close and embraced her passionately.
Later, he kissed her cheek several times.
They accused both performers of delivering a “grievous insult of values” to the “country of Kama sutra.”
She had stated at the time that the fanatical uproar was unfounded and that Richard’s conduct did not undermine Indian culture.

Richard Gere and his case
Richard, a Hollywood actor, apologized for the raucous exhibition, saying it was an attempt to show that kissing is a safe pastime that does not transfer AIDS.
The charges against Richard were swiftly dropped.
He is a Buddhist and was granted permission in 2010 to visit India to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, in Dharamshala.
Shilpa rose to international prominence after appearing on British television’s Celebrity Big Brother.
This was also in 2007 when the show received racial remarks and bullying.
