Shawn Mendes previously stated that he would have liked to play the lead in Love, Simon, a gay teen romance. The presenter asked Mendes if rumors about him auditioning for the lead role were true during an interview with Elvis Duran. “I would’ve liked to,” the Canadian singer/songwriter responded.
“Unfortunately, the timing did not work out, but that would have been incredible,” he added.
The film is notable in history for being the first major-studio adolescent rom-com to feature a gay protagonist.
It is based on Becky Albertalli’s novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and follows 17-year-old Simon Spier as he comes to terms with his sexuality.
The role was given to actor Nick Robinson, who, coincidentally, looks like Mendes’s brother.
The singer told Duran that he admired Robinson’s performance and called Love, Simon a “great, fantastic movie,” despite the fact that it was his first time seeing it.
“Watching last night, Nick just did an incredible job and it was really amazing,” Simon said of Mendes’ trip to see Love.
“Except I was freaking out every two minutes, checking my phone, because [“In My Blood”] was on the way.

Some Twitter users were amused, joking that Mendes had been “outed,” while others were offended, calling the remark harmful and rude.

“It was so, so frustrating for me because there were some people in my life that I was very, very close to who were gay and in the closet,” Mendes said on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. And I was filled with rage for those people.”
Mendes stated that commenting on sexuality speculations is “tricky” for him and that he never knows how to respond to such circumstances.
“You want to say, ‘I’m not gay, but it’d be fine if I was.

Mendes explained to Shepard that these allegations had been floating around for a long time and that he had been labeled gay since he was about 15 years old.
