According to the Daily Freeman, on July 23, 2016, Sarra murdered her mother with a fifteen-inch knife, stabbing her 227 times and hitting her with a fire extinguisher.

Sarra had invited her mother to her apartment because she was hearing voices, according to Ray.

When the police arrived after the killing, Sarra’s first words to them were, “I am under arrest.”

Sarra Engaged in Dangerous Behavior Prior to Murdering Her Mother
According to PIX11, several months before Mari’s death, in February 2016, police arrested Sarra in Ulster County and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child and animal cruelty.
She allegedly drowned a puppy in front of her 8-year-old son, then took him into the woods and threatened to kill him.
Mari’s daughter was arrested again in May 2016 for criminal contempt.
According to PIX11, she had violated an “order of protection” obtained by her boyfriend.
Sarra Gilbert Apparently Had Mental Health Issues Prior To The Murder
Attorney Ray revealed that Shannan’s convicted sister had started hearing voices and having hallucinations a few years before killing her own mother.
Sarra had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals since 2014, according to him.
She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, so she began receiving Haldol Decanoate, a long-acting injectable antipsychotic medication.
Ray claimed that Sarra had not taken her antipsychotic medication for nearly eight weeks before the murder.
During her mother’s murder trial, the prosecuting attorney, Emannuel Nneji, stated that she began using drugs as a young teen and misled everyone into believing her drugged behavior was mental illness.
Stevie, Sarra’s youngest sister, also stated that she tormented and belittled their mother for years before killing her.
She also stated that Sarra killed her mother out of jealousy. Stevie claimed that if she had the chance, Sarra would have killed her as well.
