Sam Altman is an entrepreneur, investor, programmer, and blogger. Sam Altman is the former president of Y Combinator and the CEO of OpenAI. Sam hosted a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang at his San Francisco home in 2019. He gave $250k to American Bridge 21st Century, a Super-PAC supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, in May 2020.

Early Life and Childhood

Sam Altman was born in the United States on April 22, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois. He has the age of 36.

Sam has a younger brother named Jack. His mother is a dermatologist. Sam got his first computer when he was eight years old. He was raised as a Jew.

Education Details

Sam Altman graduated from John Burroughs School and studied computer science at Stanford University before dropping out in 2005.

Sam received an honorary degree from the University of Waterloo in 2017.

Professional Career

Altman and Alex Blania founded the company with the goal of putting a special type of cryptocurrency (crypto wallet) on every human’s smartphone.

Sam’s transition to Chairman to focus more on OpenAI was announced by YC in March 2019. This decision came shortly after YC announced that its headquarters would be relocated to San Francisco.

Sam co-founded OpenAI, a for-profit research company whose goal is to advance digital intelligence in a way that will most likely benefit humanity as a whole rather than cause harm.

Sam joined Y Combinator as a part-time partner in 2011. He was appointed president of Y Combinator in February 2014. Loopt was among his first investments.

Sam stated in a 2014 blog post that the total valuation of Y Combinator companies had surpassed $65 billion, including well-known companies such as Airbnb, Dropbox, Zenefits, and Stripe.

He announced in September 2016 that he would become president of YC Group, which included Y Combinator and other units. Sam stated that he hoped to grow Y Combinator to fund 1,000 new businesses per year.

He also attempted to broaden the types of companies funded by YC, particularly ‘hard technology’ firms. YC announced his transition to Chairman in March 2019 to focus more on Open.
