The Beginning

On June 26, 2008, the New Jersey Nets selected Ryan with the 21st overall pick in the NBA draft.

He made his NBA debut against the Washington Wizards on October 29, 2008. Ryan played in 66 games for New Jersey last season, averaging 7.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game.

Ryan was dealt with the Orlando Magic on June 25, 2009, along with Vince Carter, for Tony Battie, Rafer Alston, and Courtney Lee.

In 2009–10, he appeared in 63 games for the Magic, averaging 7.7 points and 3.2 rebounds in 14.5 minutes per game. Ryan started six regular-season games and played nine postseason games.

In 2010–11, he played in 64 games for Orlando (14 starts), averaging 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game.

On July 11, 2012, the New Orleans Hornets acquired Ryan in a sign-and-trade deal that sent Gustavo Ayón to the Orlando Magic.

Years Later

On July 9, 2016, Ryan signed with the Houston Rockets. He made his Rockets debut on October 26, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds in a 120–114 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

On December 1, he scored a season-high 29 points in a 132–127 double-overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors.

He set a new season-best with 31 points in a 115–109 loss against the Memphis Grizzlies on December 23.

During the summer of 2017, the Rockets began looking for a way to transfer Anderson’s lucrative contract.

To allow for a trade out of Houston during the 2018 offseason, Ryan agreed to reduce the guarantee on his $21 million contract in 2019–20 to $15.6 million.

On August 31, 2018, Ryan was dealt with the Phoenix Suns for Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss, along with rookie guard De’Anthony Melton.

The Suns were unable to keep the player for long. On February 6, 2019, he was dealt to the Miami Heat for Wayne Ellington and Tyler Johnson.

However, on July 6, 2019, the Heat waived the player.

After that, on September 27, 2019, Ryan joined the Houston Rockets. His tenure with the Rockets was cut short on November 18, 2019, as he was discharged.

Ryan was also forced to miss chunks of games due to minor injuries. The worst of them was in December 2010, when he missed nine straight games due to an ankle ailment.
