Professional Life
Ron began his professional career in 1997 when the Boston Celtics selected him with the sixth overall choice in the NBA draft. Rick Pitino was his coach at the time.
After two seasons with the Celtics, Mercer was moved to the Nuggets in exchange for Popeye Jones. During the 1999-2000 season, he appeared in 37 games.
The former Nuggets player quit the team shortly after. The following year, he signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bulls, where he averaged 19.7 points per game in his rookie season.
He later joined the Indiana Pacers, where he was joined by Brad Miller, Ron Artest, and Kevin Ollie.
He averaged 16.8 points per game for the Pacers in 2001-02. Mercer was so committed to the Pacers that he only played as a reserve.
Ron was often traded to several teams in a short period of time. In a three-team trade in 2003-04, he was dealt to the San Antonio Spurs. He also appeared in 39 games with the Spurs.
Finally, on August 15, 2005, he signed with the New Jersey Nets, his final squad. Mercer was also waived by the Nets to avoid the luxury tax as part of the new labor agreement.
Then, in 2005, he declared his retirement. However, nothing about his post-career has been made public.
Allegation of Sexual Assault
He was once embroiled in a scandal regarding sexual assault during his professional career.
This altercation featured Mercer and another former Celtic player, Chauncey Billups.
At the home of teammate Antoine Walker, they both sexually attacked a woman.
The incident happened after Mercer left the Boston comedy club on November 9, 1997, according to a civil suit.
The victim was found to have minor injuries after many investigations.
Mercer and his friend, on the other hand, were not charged criminally. In the year 2000, the case was finally solved.
