Robert Covington

Robert Covington is a professional basketball player. Robert Covington played collegiate basketball for the Tennessee State Tigers before making it to the NBA. He was awarded to the First-Team All-OVC in 2012 while there.

Covington’s ascension into the NBA League was not as simple as many people believe. In the 2013 draft, no teams showed interest in him.

Childhood, Family, and Education

Robert Covington was born on December 14, 1990, in Bellwood, Illinois, United States.

Teresa Bryant, his mother, married Dennis Bryant while he was a child.

So, Robert grew up near Hillside, Illinois, with his stepfather, Dennis. Furthermore, nothing is known about his biological father.

Covington, on the other hand, learned to like his stepfather, and Dennis loved him as if he were his own son.

Dennis Bryant Jr. and Deveon Bryant, his younger siblings, were born later.

Later in life, both of his younger brothers became athletes and played soccer in high school and college.

Dennis was quick to notice his children’s athletic potential and frequently took them outside to play various sports.

Covington, on the other hand, began to take an interest in basketball.

He grew up in a really friendly environment, and both of his parents informed him that if he continued to play well, he might be a great athlete.

It was not, however, as simple as it appeared. Robert was a skinny boy growing up, and there were a lot of kids in town who had amazing talents and were relatively better at their skills than he was.

Dennis, on the other hand, would not let him give up. He joined an AAU team in Illinois under coach Kevin Dockery after failing to make his grade school and middle school teams.

He gradually progressed as a player, eventually making the Proviso West High School basketball team.

He could have given up a long time ago if it hadn’t been for his father’s motivation.

He also attended Proviso till 2009, after which he transferred to Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville to continue his education.

Net Worth

Robert Covington’s net worth is estimated to be between $1 and $5 million, according to various estimates.

His main source of income, though, is from league games.

The athlete only played in seven games for the Houston Rockets in his debut NBA regular season, but he was paid roughly $490k by the team, which was more than he was paid in the NBA D-League.

He did, however, become a regular small forward for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA.

As a result, he began to earn a substantial sum of money each year. During his four seasons with the 76ers, he made roughly $19 million.

Covington’s NBA career has already netted him more than $50 million.

He is currently a member of the Los Angeles Clippers, where he earns almost $13 million each year. With that pay, Robert is the Clippers’ fifth-highest-paid player this season.

He benefited from a growth spurt during his freshman year of high school, which had a significant impact on his game.

He was already an excellent jump shooter, but he improved his passing and defense skills as well. Furthermore, his constant practice with the AAU had aided him in improving his abilities.

As a result, he led his club to win the 2009 West Suburban Championship. He averaged 18.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game during his final season.

Career in College

Robert decided to attend Tennessee State University after graduating from high school and majored in science.

Despite the fact that his favored faculty required a lot of time, he was still able to play basketball and do well in class.

Covington averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in his first season, appearing in all 32 games. He got multiple awards for his debut season performance.

He improved as a small forward as a sophomore, averaging eight double-doubles over the course of the season. He averaged 13.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in his sophomore season.

Similarly, his last two college seasons were incredibly successful in comparison to his previous two outstanding seasons. However, due to injuries, he missed approximately ten games during his senior season.

A Professional Life

Covington went undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft despite an outstanding career with the Tennessee State Tigers.

However, on July 15, 2013, he signed a contract with the Houston Rockets and was immediately sent to the NBA D-Rio League’s Grande Valley Vipers.

NBA D-League games were essential in gaining the attention of NBA analysts. That season, he averaged 23.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, winning him Rookie of the Year honors (2014).

On November 15, 2014, he signed a five-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers following that season.

Over the years, Covington has established himself as one of the top small forwards in the NBA, putting up excellent performances season after season.

Until the 2017-18 season, he spent four complete seasons with the 76ers. Each season, he scored above 10.0 points each game. He was also putting up outstanding numbers on defense.

After playing 13 games for the 76ers in the 2018-19 season, he was moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He had a lot of injuries throughout his time with the Timberwolves.

He got a knee injury after a few games and had to sit on the bench for a long time before recovering.

Later, he was briefly assigned to the Iowa Wolves by the organization.

Unfortunately, his knee injuries worsened before he could return to the NBA League the following season.

As a result, he missed a lot of games this season, appearing in only 48 games for the Timberwolves.

On February 4, 2022, he was dealt with by the Los Angeles Clippers.

He spent the previous two seasons with his former team, the Houston Rockets, and the Portland Trail Blazers.

Problems with Mental Health

He was on the verge of retiring from the game after suffering an injury while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2018.

He also mentioned that he preferred to be alone and avoided those who were close to him.

However, he sought advice from the church and sought professional help, as a result of which he was able to recover.

He also expresses gratitude to former Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders, who assisted him in overcoming his depression.

When he felt like he was at the bottom of his life, all he needed was somebody to talk to and soothe him.

In addition to sharing his story, he encouraged others to take mental health seriously and begin having dialogues about anxiety and sadness.

The athlete was also affiliated with The Elephant in the Room, Inc, a mental health charity that has been operating since 2017.
