Who is Richard Epstein?

Early Life and Childhood

Richard Epstein was born in New York, New York, USA on April 17, 1943. He has been alive for 78 years.

Richard’s grandparents were Ashkenazi Jews who immigrated to the United States in the early twentieth century from Russia and Austria.

His father was a radiologist, and his mother ran his father’s medical practice. He was raised by his two sisters.

Richard Epstein went to P.S. 161 for elementary school. Later, in the early 1960s, Richard enrolled as an undergraduate at Columbia University.

He obtained special permission from the university to pursue a program of study in sociology, philosophy, and mathematics that he chose. In 1964, he received his B.A. summa cum laude.

Richard’s undergraduate performance earned him a Kellett Fellowship, and he chose Oxford to study at Oriel College, where he earned a first-class honors B.A. in jurisprudence in 1966.

Richard later returned to the United States to attend Yale Law School as a transfer student in his second year. He received his LL.B. cum laude in 1968.

Professional Career

Epstein is the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law and the Director of New York University’s Classical Liberal Institute.

Richard was named the inaugural director of the Classical Liberal Institute, a new academic research center established by NYU Law in 2013.

He has been the Peter and Kirsten Bedford Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, a prominent American public policy think tank, since 2001.

Richard is also a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago and the James Parker Hall Distinguished Service Professor of Law Emeritus.

The Libertarian podcast is hosted by Richard. It is a series in which he offers his unique perspective on national developments in public policy and the law. Every week, the podcast airs.

Richard rose to prominence in the American legal community with his 1985 book Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain.

In it, he argued that the Fifth Amendment’s “takings clause”—which states, “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation”—was violated.

It has traditionally been regarded as a check on the governmental power of eminent domain.

He is a legal scholar who is well-known for his work on torts, contracts, property rights, law and economics, classical liberalism, and libertarianism.

Richard, Gregory, Charles, Kalven, and Harry published Cases and Materials on the Law of Torts in 1977.
