Paul Mescal and his ink

Paul Mescal sat down with GQ’s Jonathan Heaf on November 28, 2020, and discussed many aspects of his life.

His body art was one of them.

Mescal demonstrated his guitar skills to Heaf during the interview.

The interviewer noticed a tattoo on the inside of his left elbow as he replaced his guitar.

Heaf cracked a joke and asked the Aftersun actor if the tattoo was a drawing of a crop circle or a Mayan glyph.

Mescal revealed that he recently got the “literally meaningless” body art.

Paul Mescal simply purchased it because he liked the design. His other two tattoos, on the other hand, mean a lot to him.

On the inside of his upper left arm, he has a small swallow. The bird appears to be flying in a simple line design.

It measures approximately an inch and a half in length. Mescal revealed that the tattoo was inspired by his father.

“My dad and I used to go into the garden around March to spot the first swallows of the spring,” he said, explaining why the ink of a Swallow reminds him of his father and home.

Normal People is the subject of the actor’s third tattoo. Heaf initially mistook it for Biro marks.

Paul Mescal, on the other hand, clarified, “That’s a deer, a stag…” and added, “That, erm, has something to do with Normal People…” He did not elaborate on the reference, but Heaf did his own research.

He noticed two references to deer or stags in the book/series.

The first was a pub in Dublin called Stag’s Head, where Connell went with a visiting writer.

The second allusion is to a deer in Connell’s writing, which he sent to Marianne while she was studying Erasmus in Sweden.

Marianne was dissatisfied with him and her life in Dublin.

A deer was spotted while driving at night, according to the letter.

“It’s strange to me when animals pause because they seem so intelligent, but maybe that’s because I associate pausing with thought,” he wrote.

Deer are, in any case, graceful. If you were an animal, you couldn’t do much worse than be a deer.”

Daisy Edgar-Jones, Mescal’s co-star in Normal People, admires his tattoo collection.

She revealed in an interview with Elle that of her recent co-stars, including Sebastian Sta, Andrew Garfield, and Mescal, she would let the latter tattoo her.

“I think I’d let Paul,” she said. I believe he’d have a steady hand and a nice taste in tattoos.”
