Professional Career

Barcelona

Gasol began his playing career in high school, and at the age of 16, he was a member of FC Barcelona’s junior team. In the meanwhile, he won the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in 1998 and the FIBA Europe U-18 Championship in 1998.

Gasol was also named the Most Valuable Player in the 2001 Spanish National Cup Final Championship game.

The Atlanta Hawks selected him third overall in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft, and he was later traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Gasol was named NBA Rookie of the Year and to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in his first season with the Memphis Grizzlies, making him the first overseas player to do so.
