Patrick began his club career in 2008, when he was 19 years old, with the Ukrainian team BC Dnipro. In October, he signed a one-year contract with the team, but they pledged to let him go once the season was over.
He averaged 16.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in 46 games with them in the Ukrainian Basketball league.
The Los Angeles Lakers selected him as the overall 42nd choice in the NBA draft in 2009.
His draft rights were later taken from the Lakers by the Miami Heat, but he was not listed on the team’s roster.
