In an interview with shethepeople.tv in July 2022, Parveen Kaur discussed how she was forced to play stereotypical roles at the start of her career.
“It’s all a learning experience,” she says, “and the best you can do is try to bring as much humanity and conviction to the role as you can and enjoy the character.”
According to Kaur, questions about diversity and equal representation should be directed at decision-makers rather than people of color.
“All I can do is try to play the characters I’ve been given, which are very limited. “As a South Asian woman, I don’t have a lot of characters,” she added.
“I can take this experience of working on Manifest and show my upbringing that may be different from the writers’ room and may not always be accurate,” she added.
Her character, Dr. Saanvi Bahl, was not portrayed as a stock character, which is why Kaur accepted the role of doctor despite having previously stated that she would never play a doctor again.
Again, landing her Manifest role was a big deal for her. “I mean, this is my first big show, I haven’t done anything remotely close to Manifest,” she said in an interview with BriefTake.
“Oh, we are so privileged to be able to shoot in New York, it is not common for something like this to happen,” she continued.
“New York is a secondary character in the show. As a Canadian who moved from a small town in Canada to live in New York, my first scene was shot outside Manhattan. It felt like a dream, and we were grateful,” she added.
