Professional Career

At the age of 14, Juolevi began playing junior hockey for the Jokerit U16 club in Finland in 2012-13. The following year, he was a member of the Jokerit U20 team in the Jr.

After accumulating 32 points (6 goals and 26 assists) in 44 games, he was chosen to the league’s First All-Star Team and crowned Rookie of the Year.

Similarly, the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League selected Juolevi 45th overall in the 2015 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft during the off-season (OHL).

Juolevi made a promise to the Knights shortly after, leaving his junior career in Finland.

The Ontario Hockey League

Juolevi grew up in the Jokerit program before heading to the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League in 2015 to play major junior hockey (OHL).

After one season with the London Knights, he was chosen by the Vancouver Canucks. In any case, he applies the pressure and applies it thickly.

A well-balanced skater can easily rush the puck or quickly backcheck through the neutral zone. He takes advantage of his height, but he also recognizes and plays within his physical limitations.

Furthermore, rather than playing overly aggressively, Olli makes his presence felt by displaying his high-end playmaking ability and puck possession.

In general, a well-rounded blueliner who can be trusted and thrives under pressure.

In 2015-16, Juolevi finished third among OHL rookie defensemen with 42 points (9 goals, 33 assists) in 57 games, and 13th overall among defensemen.

He was named to the OHL Second All-Rookie Team and Third All-Star Team.

He also had 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists) in 18 games during the 2016 OHL playoffs, ranking second among all defensemen as the Knights won the J Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions.

Part of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2016 NHL Draft

With the Knights advancing to the 2016 Memorial Cup, Juolevi recorded seven assists in four games and was nominated to the tournament’s All-Star Team, leading London to a national championship.

Juolevi was highly regarded by scouts after contributing significantly to London’s championship season.

NHL Central Scouting ranked him sixth among draft-eligible players in North America, citing his offensive play.

He was also the first defenceman taken in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks, who took him fifth overall.

On August 5, 2016, Juolevi signed his first professional contract with the Canucks, signing to a three-year entry-level contract.

After earning 13 points in 18 games in his maiden AHL season, Juolevi was forced to sit out the rest of the season due to knee surgery.

Following his injury-shortened season, Juolevi was reassigned to Utica to begin the 2019-20 season. Juolevi was injured again in November 2019, after scoring 5 points in 14 games, although he recovered three weeks later.

Furthermore, before the 2019-20 AHL season was halted and subsequently canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Olli would appear in 45 Utica games, earning 25 points.

With the Canucks for the first time

Juolevi made his NHL debut with the Canucks in the Qualifying Round matchup against the Minnesota Wild during the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs.

In that game, Vancouver defeated Minnesota 5-4 in overtime to advance to the First Round, and he played 6:16.

For the first time in his career, Juolevi earned a position on Vancouver’s roster right out of training camp the following season.

The Florida Panthers

On October 10, 2021, the Canucks traded Juolevi to the Panthers. He did, however, remain on the roster as a healthy scratch.

He was assigned to the Charlotte Checkers before making his Panthers debut against the Arizona Coyotes on December 10, 2021.

On March 5, 2022, the Panthers placed him on waivers after he went scoreless in nearly ten games.

International Sports Competitions

Juolevi represented Finland at the 2016 World Junior Championships, where they won gold on January 5, 2016. To honor his performance, he was named to the tournament’s All-Star team.

Juolevi was also appointed Finland’s captain for the 2017 World Junior Championships.

Finland was unable to match their performance in the previous year’s competition, finishing ninth and defeating Team Latvia to avoid relegation.

Injury

Olli continues to defy expectations, but not in a great way.

The No. 5 overall first-round choice of the Vancouver Canucks in 2016, he was unable to gain a roster place with the organization last season and was loaned back to Finland.

Juolevi has spent most of this season with their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets.

The teenage defender suffered a leg injury, but he was only out for a few weeks. Juolevi also returned to work with the Comets last week.

However, the Canucks announced this evening that Juolevi had surgery on his knee today and will miss the rest of the season.

The truth is that the current first-round pick will have to wait another season to make his NHL debut, and he may have to wait even longer if Juolevi’s knee injury was more serious than initially thought or if the team was playing it safe.

He is expected to be fully recovered by training camp, but he is not promised a roster spot and will most likely have to show himself game-ready by starting another season in the minors.

Recovery

According to the team’s news release, the Canucks’ medical staff believed that “surgery was the best option for Juolevi’s long-term health and career.”

However, the decision had to be made based on whether the team thought he will be needed this season or early next season, which was plainly not the case.

If there was any dispute about whether University of Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes had surpassed Juolevi as Vancouver’s best defensive prospect, the discussion is now over.

Hughes, the seventh overall pick in June, is projected to move into a starting role with the Canucks next season, if not sooner.

Furthermore, Juolevi’s future is uncertain, as its growth has been hampered by injuries and lackluster performance.

Addiction to Video Games

Despite some very bad accusations, Canucks prospect Olli is not the anonymous player who will miss out on an NHL career due to video-game addiction.

Olli was the athlete in question, according to Dhiren Mahiban, who has written about sports for the Canadian Press, the New York Times, and other publications.

Also, despite some extremely bad accusations, Canucks prospect Olli is not the nameless prospect who will miss out on an NHL career due to video-game addiction.

Furthermore, he stated that the athlete would not make the NHL owing to his addiction.
