Professional Career, Oh Hye-Ri
Before the Olympics
She began competing professionally in various contests when she was 14 years old.
However, she did not show much enthusiasm during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, claiming that her skill was not mature enough to compete on that level.
The next Olympic Games she had her eye on ended up being beyond her grasp.
She was suffering from a severely torn quad.
Despite this, she pushed her luck and competed in the qualification two weeks after her injury.
Given the difficult nature of the Olympic selection procedure and the high level of competition, she was eliminated when she couldn’t get a suitable angle for the kicks with her inflamed thigh. She was let down but not disheartened.
She competed in the 2015 World Championship in Chelyabinsk, Russia, when she was as fit as a violin; her years of practice and sacrifice paid off as she went on to win the gold medal.
Olympics
She might finally engage in her long-term dream, a dream worth everything.
Despite being a world champion, she found it difficult to win the Olympics.
She progressed further, but her final match was against France’s renowned Haby “The Abigator” Niare.
The battle was so fierce that even the referee worked hard to avoid making mistakes.
She was losing in the first round to Niare, but she was stubborn and her concentration was too intense to give up without a fight.
Soon after, she started launching and pushing French fighters back.
The duel progressed, becoming more intense in the third round, with both parties attempting to feint each other and landing a few kicks. The scoreboard showed the point constantly, and the players gave their all at the peak of their excitement; the match was incredible.
However, only one winner is possible. She understood how high the score had soared and how close the score had been 13-12 when the dust settled and her surroundings became more visible.
The dove soared high in the sky as the August wind blew, bearing the word that Korea had added another gold to their collection.
Oh, Hye-RI was crowned World and Olympic Taekwondo Champion.
Following the Olympics
Bringing gold to the country, on the other hand, was not as enjoyable as she had hoped.
Her disappointment was worsened by the wider public’s indifference.
She claimed that the general people disliked how athletes acted during the Olympics because they were not showy and were more concerned with winning than with entertaining.
Of course, the purpose of an athlete’s years of dedication is to win, not to amuse others.
Her fellow citizen’s indifferent answer, on the other hand, left her severely dissatisfied.
She also mentioned how difficult it is to be a Taekwondo player in a country where the sport is the national sport.
She claimed that their high hopes and ‘Korean must-have’ image overshadowed their accomplishments and harsh criticism for failing to win a medal.
“If we earn gold, they remark, ‘Well, you should have!'” she explained.
They ask, “What’s wrong with you?” if we don’t.
She hopes that the Korean people will notice their efforts and struggles and treat them with compassion.
Even though it is their national sport, the effort and difficulty are equivalent to those of any other sport and necessitate the same level of dedication and practice.
